Job Description

We have an opening in our Pump Stations department for a Water Operator - General. This position may report out of our Naugatuck, CT or Farmington, CT location. Please see reporting addresses below the description.

The Water Operator – General is responsible for providing excellent customer service by maintaining and operating all of the systems wells, pump stations, tanks, treatment stations, and operating valves including systems operated under contract in their assigned area. They will also ensure the delivery of high quality water by inspecting, testing, adjusting, and repairing pumps, meters, gauges, control valves, generators, chemical feeders, filters, recorders, and other related equipment. This also includes watershed inspections and the performance of compliance tests on backflow device equipment as needed.

  • Performs preventive/corrective maintenance as required on chemical systems, pumps, operating valves, buildings, and storage tanks. Orders and procures parts for owned and contracted systems.
  • Calibrates and standardizes analyzers and other equipment.
  • The Water Company is committed to providing a safe workplace.
  • Operates and tests emergency pumps and generators as required.
  • Calculates dosages, handles chemicals, and records production, chemical use, and compliance data.
  • Responsible for participating in weekend, holiday and standby assignments as needed.
  • Additional responsibilities as assigned.
  • The position is responsible for learning, following and ensuring compliance with all safety rules. This includes rules and regulations in the Company Safety Manual, OSHA regulations and other state, federal, or governing body’s rules and regulations.
  • Inspects and reports on the source protection program. Performs dam inspections and reports reservoir levels. Performs boundary marking.
  • Adjusts chemical feeders to maintain proper dosage rates.
  • Operates and maintains operating systems. Reports deficiencies to lead or supervisor so appropriate action can be taken. Corrects deficiencies with minimal assistance. Assists other departments and other operators as needed. Changes production meters.
  • Obtains distribution, source, process, and compliance samples as required.

Minimum Qualification

  • High School diploma or equivalent required
  • Must be able to work independently
  • Respirator use required
  • Water Treatment Level II certification or ability to work towards certifications within a reasonable timeframe
  • Must be able to utilize General Office Software
  • Must have ability to work standby rotation
  • Compliance with state and federal regulations required
  • Must have Mechanical aptitude with pumps, generators, and hydraulics
  • Driver’s License required
