Volunteers of America (VOA) is a faith-based, nationwide nonprofit organization dedicated to helping those in need rebuild their lives and reach their full potential. The VOA network includes more than 16,000 full-time professionals empowering 1.5 million people annually through our 30 affiliates in 46 states. We provide hundreds of service programs, including those for seniors and people with disabilities, those experiencing homelessness, and those recovering from addiction. VOA is one of the nation’s most comprehensive human services charities, offering programs for communities, individuals, and families.

VOA is seeking a Vice President Finance – Affiliate Collaboration. The person in this role will work similarly as a consultant to the VOA affiliates, in conjunction with the VP, Affiliate Financial Services and in support of the EVP and CFO. Primary responsibilities for the selected candidate are to cultivate trust with the Affiliates CFOs, problem solve for current and trending social service accounting needs and strengthen the final oversight at our affiliates. This includes providing support to the affiliates as it relates to VOA financial data and analysis, identifying and communicating financial trends for the social service sector and to be valued as a resource to the Affiliate CEOs and CFOs. A key aspect of this position will be to find ways to promote and secure value to the affiliates with either new National programs, provide timely education and training and improving shared financial services, ensuring efficiencies to the affiliate data collection process that will allow for more analysis of the Affiliate data to help the Affiliates make better and timelier decisions and other duties as needed.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Generate data analytics on the financial program data
  • Implement annual continuous improvement plan to ensure there is an efficient process of gathering financials data from the affiliates consistently year over year
  • Collaborate with other National Office and Affiliate staff to identify relevant data to collect on the social service industry trends
  • Annual Financial Data Collection:
    • Implement annual continuous improvement plan to ensure there is an efficient process of gathering financials data from the affiliates consistently year over year
    • Collaborate with other National Office and Affiliate staff to identify relevant data to collect on the social service industry trends
    • Generate data analytics on the financial program data
  • Create solutions that allow Affiliate to voluntarily participate in those solutions. If technology based, the solutions should allow Affiliates to “plug in” to the system and/or process
  • Partner with outside vendors to create National Programs to lower costs, drive efficiencies, or bring out process opportunities that Affiliates cannot achieve on their own
  • Implement Essential Affiliate Financial Needs Survey in tandem with existing Annual Affiliate CEO/CFO Survey
  • Collaborate with the Vice President of Affiliate Financial Services to compile, analyze and prioritize Financial Needs Survey results within the Affiliate Network. Further, identify financial trends for both social service programs and with technology supporting social service programs. This will include working with other departments
  • Affiliate Support and Value-Added Solutions:
    • Implement Essential Affiliate Financial Needs Survey in tandem with existing Annual Affiliate CEO/CFO Survey
    • Collaborate with the Vice President of Affiliate Financial Services to compile, analyze and prioritize Financial Needs Survey results within the Affiliate Network. Further, identify financial trends for both social service programs and with technology supporting social service programs. This will include working with other departments

    • Co-lead the CFO Network, including planning for the monthly meetings, securing speakers, etc.
    • Lead group problem solving efforts among the Affiliates
    • Learn about Affiliates successes and facilitate back office sharing with the other Affiliates
  • Co-lead the CFO Network, including planning for the monthly meetings, securing speakers, etc.
  • Knowledge sharing with all Affiliates and subsidiaries of emerging financial trends and opportunities
  • Create best practices repository with document sharing and initial implementation support capabilities
  • Lead group problem solving efforts among the Affiliates

  • Continually review to ensure that Affiliate and Administrative fees are being calculated correctly per the existing policy
  • Affiliate and Administrative Fees:
    • Implement rotating CFO peer review team to review Affiliate and Administrative fee samples
    • Continually review to ensure that Affiliate and Administrative fees are being calculated correctly per the existing policy
    • Work with National Office and Affiliate staff to research and understand requests for fee exclusions. Lead collaborative process with the National team to process and respond to such requests
  • Investment strategies and policies
  • Cash management policies
  • Responses and rationale for program Funder audits (HUD, Veterans Affairs, etc.)
  • Various Departmental Organizational Charts
  • Business analytics and Key Performance Indicators
  • Schedule a limited number of hands-on annual Affiliate implementations of the products and services from the above portfolio on a first come first serve basis
  • Affiliate Technical Support - Collaborate with the VP of Affiliate Financial Services to:
    • Implement a self-service portfolio of support products and services for Affiliates to include, but not limited to:
      • Various Departmental Organizational Charts
      • Investment strategies and policies
      • Cash management policies
      • Business analytics and Key Performance Indicators
      • Responses and rationale for program Funder audits (HUD, Veterans Affairs, etc.)
    • Schedule a limited number of hands-on annual Affiliate implementations of the products and services from the above portfolio on a first come first serve basis
    • Provide other needed technical support to the Affiliates to strengthen the Affiliate’s back office function
    • Conducting financial reviews of Affiliates to ensure the financial health of VOA

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • 10+ years of working collaboratively with other departments and demonstrating successful outcomes

Qualifications:

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Business Administration, Finance or related field required
  • Master’s degree in Business Administration and/or CPA strongly preferred
  • 10+ years of experience in accounting for Social Service programs
