Venipuncture Technician

Overview:

Collects blood from patients, checks quality of blood, and assumes responsibility for the safety and comfort of patients, following established standards and practices.

Roles and Responsibilities:
  • Participates in Strategic Improvement Process activities as appropriate and requested including committee membership.
  • Maintains and develops competence through required in-service and continuing educational programs.
  • Maintains required files, records and reports on an ongoing basis. Facilitates and participates in the development of test script and all phases of system testing.
  • Complies with dress code policy and maintains a professional appearance (with natural fingernails neatly manicured and length of less than 1/4 inch long) as applicable.
  • Assists other personnel as required.
  • Reports for duty punctually.
  • Observes and respects the privacy and confidentiality of information in accordance with hospital policy and HIPAA.
  • Maintains Section equipment and supplies. Orders supplies when stock is low or near expiration date - as applicable.
  • Adjusts to changing situations and work assignments.
  • Maintains required files, records and reports on an ongoing basis. Facilitates and participates in the development of test script and all phases of system testing.
  • Consults with medical staff to verify test requests as needed.
  • Complies with policies and procedures concerning infection control and safety in order to maintain a safe and comfortable environment for patients, visitors and staff.
  • Follows departmental policies and procedures.
  • Maintains satisfactory attendance record.
  • Promotes a welcoming environment and professional atmosphere through courteous communication, cooperation, and respect for patients, visitors, and members of the health care team.
  • Explains procedures to patients/family and answers questions, provides physical/emotional support to patient/family, and seeks guidance when necessary.
  • Collaborates with peers, physicians and other members of the health care team as appropriate.
  • Ensures patient safety through positive identification of patient (verifies patient name, DOB & MR#).
  • Responds to customer concerns as soon as possible with compassion and understanding.
  • Displays a high degree of interest in the job and willingness to accept and carry out assignments.
  • Participates in department QA/PI program and improves performance based on results obtained from QI activities.
  • Reports and escalates concerns to Laboratory Medicine leadership regarding quality assurance issues, safety incidents or other difficulties appropriately and in accordance with departmental policy.
  • Maintains test tray and working area in sanitary condition.
  • Performs venipuncture and central accession functions, such as specimen collection, flagging and delivery, report printing and distribution, and processing of specimens for dispatch to reference labs.
  • Exhibits flexibility with respect to scheduling and work assignments.
Qualifications:
  • Successful completion of a phlebotomy course, and previous phlebotomy experience.
  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Excellent communication skills are essential.
  • Phlebotomist certification is required.
