Job Description

Facilities Management (FM) supports the University of Virginia's wide range of research, academic and patient care programs. With over 1,200 employees dedicated to excellence, Facilities Management is responsible for the day-to-day operation, repair and maintenance of UVA's buildings, infrastructure and grounds as well as other University-owned and leased properties.
We have an exciting opportunity for a Utility Locator/Damage Prevention Technician. This position is a safety-oriented position responsible for the locating and marking of university owned utilities. Additionally, the technician assists with geographic information systems data maintenance to ensure accurate records. The Utility Locator/Damage Prevention Technician works closely with project teams in the field to promote safe excavation practices, to prevent damages to infrastructure, to prevent disruption of services, and to support a safe work environment.

Responsibilities:

  • Respond to Emergency locate requests during evenings, weekends and holidays
  • Make timely response to emergency requests
  • Review drawings provided during construction project documentation review phases for the placement of RFID Marker technology
  • In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.
  • Collect GPS data on utility and underground infrastructure locations
  • P erform locating and marking of underground utilities (i.e; electrical power lines, cables, conduits and lighting cables, gas, oil, steam, petroleum or gaseous materials, communications, alarm or signal lines, potable water, reclaimed water, irrigation and slurry lines, sewer and drain lines)
  • Investigate damages to underground facilities to determine cause of damage and provide training to remediate the safety concern
  • Use ArcGIS to access utility maps/records and document corrections
  • V iew and respond to VA811 web ticket management system
  • Collaborate with project teams to meet locate request schedules and utility investigation project support
  • Conduct Damage Prevention Awareness Training Classes
  • Assist in the design and testing of geospatial applications as part of a collaborative design team
  • U se a variety of locating equipment, including a Ground Penetrating Radar device
  • Providing training to customers across university departments on VA811 laws and procedures

Required Qualifications:

  • Minimum of four years of professional experience locating utilities, utilizing GIS data, and collecting GPS data
  • Ability to effectively communicate with internal staff and external contractors
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Ability to obtain a valid Virginia Driver's License
  • Ability to utilize locating equipment (i.e; a transmitter, a receiver; ground stake and conductive (direct-connect) clips)


Required Computer Applications:

  • Familiar with geospatial software such as ArcGIS, AutoCAD, or other similar software
  • Microsoft Word

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Remote Pilot Certificate from the FAA
  • Experience presenting to small groups
  • Understanding of Virginia Underground Utility Damage Prevention Act, Locator and Excavator responsibilities
  • Associates degree in a geospatial or technical filed
  • Locator Certification (by Staking University or other similar provider)

Preferred Computer Applications:

  • Experience with drone technology
  • Microsoft PowerPoint or other presentation software
  • Trimble GPS software and hardware

Compensation:

The Anticipated Hiring Range for this position is $28.85 – $31.25 per hour ($60,000 - $65,000 Annually) . This is a full-time position with UVA benefits . Employee benefits package highlights include:
