Job Description

Latin School of Chicago provides its students with a rigorous and innovative educational program in a community that embraces diversity of people, cultures and ideas. Latin inspires its students to pursue their passions and lead lives of purpose and excellence.
Latin School of Chicago is looking for a full-time science teacher within the Upper School Science Department for the 2023-24 school year. This is a one-year interim position.
Minimally, this teacher will:

  • Work with students outside of class for extra help or enrichment
  • Be an active member of the Upper School division; participating in division-wide committees, seeking and creating opportunities to collaborate with faculty beyond the department
  • Teach four classes within the Science department, primarily chemistry or biology
  • Be an active member of the science department; participating in professional development opportunities, department meetings
  • Reflect on teaching practice, often trying new approaches to create an equitable and engaging experience for all students in science
  • Collaborate with a team of teachers on curriculum and assessment
  • Effectively communicate departmental philosophy and student performance with parents in writing grade reports and conducting parent-teacher conferences
  • Value the opportunity to serve as a student advisor

The ideal candidate will value a student-centered approach to the teaching of science and have experience teaching biology and chemistry. We value the importance of personalized learning that allows students to make mistakes, respond to feedback, and try again. A strong candidate for our science program is one that is familiar with and open to learning how to facilitate these cycles of feedback in their classroom.

  • Master's degree in Education or Biology, Chemistry, or related fieldis preferred. At least Bachelor's degree is required.
  • A student-centered approach to teaching science
  • At least 3-5 years' experience teaching grades 9-12
  • Familiarity with a standards-based approach to learning and assessment
  • A person who cultivates an inclusive and supportive climate for all students, particularly those from under-represented background, and who fosters appreciation for differences in our community
