Position Details


Summary of Duties:


This position will perform a variety of waste, bio-waste and recycling collection functions, including collecting and transporting waste, recyclable, and confidential materials from university buildings and outside locations including sorting and processing of recyclable and bio-waste materials. This position will operate one ton and larger delivery vans, forklifts, skid steer loader, recycling baler, rotary paper shredder, dust collection system and Steam treatment equipment. This position will operate a non-CDL small rear load garbage truck to collect and transport food waste and animal bedding materials to the WSU Compost facility. The use of these trucks will also include servicing small waste roll cart containers. This position will operate a non-CDL roll off truck to collect and transport large containers of waste/recycling materials. Position may assist and provide back up to Surplus Stores, Waste Collectors and STI Operators on their daily tasks.


Required Qualifications


  • Physical ability to perform the duties of the position, including ability to lift 75 lbs.
  • Ability to operate multiple types of vehicles and equipment safely in all weather conditions and working environments.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain within six (6) months of hire, a current forklift operator’s certification.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule when necessary.
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license, record free from serious traffic violations, eighteen years of age or older, the ability to read and write, and physical ability to perform heavy outdoor work; OR equivalent education/experience.


Preferred Qualifications


  • Demonstrated knowledge of recycling commodity classifications and grades of paper and plastics. Demonstrated knowledge of commingled collection processes and allowable materials.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of proper loading and transportation and shipping procedures for commodities.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate recycling and box trucks.
  • Possession of a Commercial Driver’s license and safe driving record.

Successful candidates typically begin at the beginning of the salary range and receive scheduled salary increment increases in accordance with WAC 357-28 OR applicable Collective Bargaining Agreement.
