DEPARTMENT DESCRIPTION:
Patient transport staff are the glue that holds our healthcare system together making sure patients get to their destinations within our hospitals and helping maintain an excellent patient experience. Summary:
Under supervision, the Transporter provides safe, competent and efficient transportation and assumes total responsibility for patient’s welfare to and from various areas of the hospital by either wheelchair or liter.
Responsibilities:
  • Provides patient transportation service to and from the following areas and departments: Xray, Ultrasound, Nuclear Medicine, Electrocardiogram, Outpatient Lab, EEG/EMG, Stress Lab, Vascular Lab, Emergency Department, PACU, Outpatient Clinic, Admitting, Morgue, Respiratory Therapy, Physical Therapy, ICU, Cast Room, Physician’s Offices and all patient floors.
  • In the event of any emergency while transporting a patient, takes proper steps in getting the patient to proper help immediately.
  • Transports deceased patients from the Emergency Department to the morgue
  • Using precaution and employing necessary basic principles of body mechanics, transfers patients to and from their bed or chair to a wheelchair or liter.
  • Transports discharged patients from their rooms to their transportation (personal or taxi) assuring the patient’s safety into the vehicle.
  • Answers telephone calls requesting transporting of patients.
  • Checks O2 tanks daily to ensure full tanks for the shift. Contacts Respiratory Department for replacement tanks.
  • During transporting, is observant of IV flow, reporting any malfunctions to the nurse manager or the IV team.
  • Obtains all pertinent information as to whether patient has IVs, Med Pumps, foley tube, chest tube, oxygen or any Other devices which may affect the patient’s transport.
  • Transfers all IV bottles to and from the chair or liter.
  • Arranges with the nurse or respiratory technician the transferring of the patient’s oxygen to and from the wall receptacle and portable oxygen tanks.
  • During transporting is observant of oxygen flow, proper positioning of oxygen nose apparatus, and proper supply of oxygen in portable tank, reporting any abnormalities to the nurse manager or respiratory technician.
  • Records information immediately on department log, including: patient’s name, location, destination, method of transport, identity of transporter(s) and the time the call is complete.
  • On request, transports vital equipment to and from the Intensive Care Unit, Operating Room and Emergency Department.
  • Transports newly admitted patients form the Emergency Department by liter or wheelchair to their assigned rooms.
  • Assists, when requested, in transporting PACU patients to their rooms.
  • Properly affixes the patient’s Foley tube and receptacles to the bed, liter or wheelchair.
  • Transports newly admitted patients from admission either directly or through the hospital pre-op procedure (EKG, Lab and Xray to their assigned rooms.
  • Assures proper patient identification by reading identification bracelet and reports to nursing staff when there is no bracelet available.
  • Transport transferred patients from one room to another by wheelchair, liter or bed.
  • Removes and transports deceased patients from the patient’s room to the morgue.
  • Ensures that all patient’s chest tubes and containers are properly placed on the liter, bed or wheelchair.
  • When appropriate, contracts the patient’s floor to ascertain how the patient is to be transported (wheelchair or liter).
