Job Description
General Summary Of Position


Responsible for the transport of patients, supplies and equipment, throughout the hospital.


Primary Duties And Responsibilities


  • May perform supply restocking or assume clerical duties such as answering phones.
  • May be required to transport deceased persons to the morgue.
  • Maintains and cleans transportation equipment.
  • Ensure the safe movement of patients of all ages from the emergency department to all areas of the hospital to include the laboratory and radiology departments, the operating room, and patient hospital rooms.
  • Provide distribution services of requested items between various departments as needed in accordance with established procedures that may include medications, to include narcotics.
  • Validate patients' identity based on established department protocol.
  • Transport lab specimens and equipment, such as stretchers and wheelchairs
  • Remain alert to patient condition and promptly communicates changes to clinical staff.
  • Collect, clean and disinfect patient care equipment and all other reusable items.
  • Assist with patient handling and lifting using appropriate patient safety equipment, proper body mechanics, and appropriate patient safety handling procedures.
  • Communicate status updates and location information as required in accordance with department protocols to help facilitate work flow.


Minimum Qualifications


Education


  • High School Diploma or GED required


Experience


  • Less than 1 year 6 months previous healthcare experience preferred


Licenses and Certifications


  • Basic Life Support through American Heart Association required
  • Current CPR required or


Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities


  • Knowledge of operating and safety procedures of patient stretchers and beds.
  • Ability to recognize and report faulty equipment.
  • Ability to read, write and speak or communicate in English to successfully accomplish the essential duties of the position.
  • Ability to work effectively with people from a variety of culturally diverse backgrounds. o Ability to maintain patient confidentiality.
  • Exhibits professionalism, courtesy and excellent customer service, while interacting with patients, guests and co-workers.
  • Ability to comprehend and follow the policies and procedures for MedStar Southern Maryland Hospital Center.
  • Ability to maintain alertness to emergency situations during patient transportation and seek help promptly if the need arises.
  • Ability to demonstrate ethical behavior that supports the hospital's mission, values and commitment to compliance with all federal, state and regulatory laws. Inspires trust and exhibits honesty and integrity within the scope of daily activities.
  • Ability to connect and disconnect gauges to oxygen cylinders following specified safety precautions.
  • Knowledge of patient lifting and handling procedures so as to minimize patient discomfort and potential for injury.
