The pay range listed above reflects the FULL pay range for this position. Salary offers are based on the candidate's equivalent experience and internal equity with other employees within the same job classification. The position is eligible for overtime compensation for all hours worked over 40 in the designated workweek.

About The Position

The Transportation Inspector performs inspections on construction projects taking place in the MCDOT right of way. Additionally, the Inspector-Permits protects the interests of the county and its taxpayers by ensuring a quality construction product, which will limit premature maintenance and future safety hazards. This position will interface with contractors, engineers, land developers and property owners throughout the full development process.

We Require


  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Must possess or have the ability to obtain a valid Arizona driver's license by the time of hire
  • A combination of post-secondary education and/or job-related experience may substitute for the minimum qualifications on a year-for-year basis
  • Two years of experience as an inspector, OR two years of experience in an engineering or construction field including surveying, drainage inspecting, hydrology, plan reviewing/examination and interpretation

  • National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET) (Highway Construction Inspection or Materials Testing)
  • Arizona Technical Testing Institute Certifications (ATTI)
  • Experience in utility construction, bridge construction, plan review, reading construction plans, and geotechnical work
  • Associate degree or higher in Engineering or a closely related field
  • Certified Public Infrastructure Inspector (CPII)
  • American Public Works Association (APWA)
  • American Concrete Institute (ACI) Concrete Field Grade 1


Job Contributions


  • Enforce penalties when specifications are not met
  • Conduct pre-construction conferences, ongoing inspections, and final acceptance inspections of sub-divisions
  • Coordinate all permit activity with contractors, subcontractors, utility companies, survey crews, soils lab, consultants, geotechnical firms, developers, and engineers as construction proceeds
  • Compile final test packets and as-builts for release of completed projects to be entered into county maintenance system
  • Assure permitted projects are completed safely and per approved plans/specifications or approved revisions. Promote and enforces public safety
  • Review plans for accuracy and constructability
  • Review and approve traffic control plans for compliance to MCDOT and MUTCD standards, also inspect the job sites for correct placement of the traffic control devices
  • Issue cease work and encroachment notices for unauthorized, unsafe, or deficient construction. Investigates citizen complaints and mediate a satisfactory resolution


Working Conditions


  • Exerting 50 - 100 pounds occasionally, 10 - 25 pounds frequently, or up to 10 - 20 pounds constantly
  • Incumbent may be subjected to extreme temperatures, wetness/humidity, respiratory hazards and noise and vibrations


Machines, Tools, Equipment, Software, and Hardware:


  • Computer, smart phone, smart level, measuring tape, design specifications


Protective Equipment Required:


  • Standard P.P.E. (hard hats, safety vest, safety boots, safety glasses)
