King County Metro Transit’s Facilities Division
has an exciting opportunity for multiple Transit Carpenters. The Transit Carpenter is responsible for performing journey-level carpentry in support of construction, repair, and maintenance of equipment, buildings, and other structures throughout the Metro Transit system. Additional duties may include replacing glass panels and adding or repairing mullions at bus shelters, installing trash cans, hanging new doors, installing and repairing locks, and other carpentry duties.

The ideal candidate will have four (4) or more years of journey-level carpentry experience, performing a wide array of repairs to various structures. Previous locksmith experience is also preferred.

This recruitment will immediately fill two (2) Career Service positions, and may be used to establish an eligibility list to fill future Career Service, Term Limited Temporary, and/or Special Duty Assignment vacancies that may occur over the next twelve (12) months.

Job Duties

Applying equity and social justice principles is a daily responsibility and a foundational expectation for all King County employees. All employees are expected to model and apply our equity and social justice shared values, behaviors, and practices. As the Transit Carpenter, you will also:
  • Repair and maintain all structural components of buildings including walls, floors, ceilings, partitions, doorways, window casements, stairways, roofs, walkways, door locks and hardware, and similar structures; install drywall; fabricate and repair guardrails, fences, decks, and similar structures.
  • Operate and maintain carpentry shop equipment and tools.
  • Refurbish approximately 4-6 bus passenger shelters weekly with a team of carpenters.
  • Drive standard trucks and lifts in the performance of assigned duties.
  • Design, construct, and repair cabinets, counters, specialty items, and miscellaneous items.
  • Perform locksmith duties and work on various doors.
  • Install trash cans and benches, which may include working near the right-of-way and near traffic.
  • Maintain working relationships with vendors, attending meetings.
  • Replace glass panels, and add and repair mullions at bus passenger stations.
  • Build concrete forms, pour cement, and finish a variety of concrete features.
  • Transport old and refurbished bus shelters as needed.
  • Keep simple records of time and materials using handwritten logs and time records; correspond with others using email and other methods of communication.

Experience, Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills

To be considered eligible for this role, applicants must possess these MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to work constructively on a team and with variety of individuals from diverse backgrounds.
  • Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety practices within the carpentry trade.
  • Ability to work independently and with minimal supervision.
  • Working knowledge of basic mathematical formulas, construction terminology, and building codes.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Four years of journey-level carpentry work experience, or completion of a 4-year (or 8,000 hour) carpentry apprenticeship or vocational training program, or some combination thereof demonstrating the ability to perform the duties of the position.
  • Skill in framing, glazing, doors, locks, concrete, and shop work.
  • Demonstrate behaviors that include fairness, respect, inclusiveness, integrity, and ethical conduct.
  • Knowledge of standard construction techniques, principles and building systems.
  • Ability to provide excellent customer service to internal and external customers.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Skill in the interpretation and application of building blueprints and related design schematics.
  • Knowledge of Uniform Building Code and related building regulations.

The most competitive applicants will possess these DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
:
  • Completion of a carpentry apprenticeship program and/or vocational training program related to the trade.
  • Experience and/or knowledge related to troubleshooting and/or inspecting projects or job sites.
  • Experience performing locksmith duties.
  • Experience performing maintenance carpentry duties.

Necessary Special Requirements
:
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a valid Transportation Workers Identification Credential (TWIC) issued by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA).
  • Ability to obtain and maintain forklift and high-lift certification within six (6) months of hire (training to be provided by employer).
  • Valid Washington State driver license, with an acceptable driving record.

SELECTION PROCESS

WORK LOCATION AND SCHEDULE
The work location will be at South Maintenance Facility (11911 E Marginal Way S; Seattle, WA 98134). This position is typically scheduled full time (40 hours per week), with a typical schedule of 5 days/8 hours per day, day shift. However, because schedules are selected by a seniority-based twice-annual ‘shift pick’, employees must be available and willing to work any shift (day, swing, or graveyard), weekends, nights, holidays, and call-outs. This position is not exempt from the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act and is therefore overtime eligible, with prior supervisory approval. This position is not eligible for telework/remote work.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
Work may be performed indoors or outdoors, sometimes in inclement weather. Specific tasks may require the use of a respirator, and therefore position is subject to respirator fit-testing. Additionally, indoor work may include exposure to exhaust and fumes. When warranted, must be able and willing to wear proper safety equipment and protective clothing as required, including hearing and eye protection.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
This position is required to frequently lift and carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds, and may involve lifting and carrying objects weighing up to 100 pounds with assistance. Frequent walking, reaching, climbing, kneeling, stooping, and safe operation of power tools are also required. Work is often performed in cramped and awkward positions, and may require working at heights with fall protection.
