Job Title: Transfer Station Operator, Solid Waste Management
Department: Solid Waste Administration

JOB SUMMARY
The primary function of this position is to weigh vehicles in and out of the transfer station and maintain transfer station property.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Clean work area and equipment.
  • In the event of special, emergency, or disaster situations, employee may be required to work schedules other than those for which they are regularly scheduled in any capacity deemed appropriate.
  • Oversees activities in the absence of the Solid Waste Supervisor
  • Keep records of all cash, credit card, and check transactions; prepare daily bank deposits and ledger; is moderately supervised in the reconciliation of monies and audit of receipts.
  • Weigh solid waste and recycling vehicles, and other public and private vehicles, in and out of transfer station.
  • Issuance of receipts for the transaction and or funds collected, making change for cash transactions.
  • Cleans and maintains Transfer Station, to include lawn maintenance, painting, and minor repairs.
  • Operate inbound/outbound computerized truck scales to track wastes being disposed or recycled. Weighs commercial & private vehicles.
  • Perform basic repairs and maintenance of equipment.
  • Maintain a log of visitors to the Transfer Station
  • Assist/support public with household hazardous deposits and pour-offs in absence of HHW staff.
  • Answer telephone inquiries regarding services, hours of operation and fees.
  • Provide courteous and respectable customer service via telephone or in person. Supporting both external and internal customers, through positive and informative communications.
  • Accurately prepare daily reports, balance receipts, closing reports, performs bookkeeping functions daily to process and account for Solid Waste revenue and account for numerical receipts used daily.
  • Performs other related job duties as assigned.
  • Operates heavy equipment.
  • Communicate tonnage & other necessary information to the Transfer Station & Landfill Operators or Supervisors to ensure accurate disposal procedures.
  • Determine specific information about each load, then direct customers to appropriate disposal or recycling area and inspect loads for hazardous waste.
  • Perform data entry, and light filing.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience:
High School Diploma or GED required. Working knowledge of computer and other office equipment. 6 months to 1-year minimum amount of prior related work experience.
Special Qualifications:
Requires Florida Driver’s License Class B CDL within 6 months of hire. This position is designated as a Safety Sensitive Position. An employee in the position is subject to the mandatory Department of Transportation Drug Testing Program which involves random drug testing.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Ability to make decisions that govern my activities as well as others. Decisions impact how unit provides services and support to internal and external customers.
  • Ability to work with less than ten coworkers who mostly engage in the same activities.
  • Ability to work from a general outline of duties and responsibilities.
  • Knowledge of clerical or trades-based tasks. Some of the typical responsibilities include gathering, formatting, or visually analyzing data OR operating construction or warehouse equipment (moving vans, dump trucks, front-end loaders).
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Work in a dynamic environment that requires being sensitive to change and responsive to changing goals, priorities, and needs. Intermittently balancing, crouching, feeling, fingering, grasping, handling, hearing, lifting, mental acuity, pulling pushing, reaching, repetitive motion, speaking, talking, and visual acuity. Also requires heavy work exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force to move objects. Occasionally exposed to toxic fumes, airborne particles, and inclement weather.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
  • On-call Requirement: On call 24 hours pending disasters and emergencies. May be required to provide disaster assistance during times of emergency in any capacity deemed appropriate.
  • Work is performed in an environment with heavy equipment and machinery that could result in bodily harm to co-workers or others.
