This position is responsible for the professional maintenance and repair of the rail system track and right-of-way. This is a safety sensitive position subject to the rules and regulations of the RTD Drug and Alcohol Policy.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  • Conducts self in an appropriate manner as a representative of RTD, working effectively in a diverse work environment using prudent judgment at all times, performing duties in a safe manner, and assuring professional quality of work to all external and internal customers.
  • Performs various physical duties to successfully complete job responsibilities. This can include, but is not limited to: bending, stooping, climbing, reaching, twisting, and engaging in strenuous heavy lifting and carrying heavy objects.
  • Performs job duties in a maintenance environment, which can include, but is not limited to: working with fumes, chemicals, various noise levels, and in various outdoor weather conditions and extreme temperatures as required.
  • Performs daily walking inspections of track alignment to include uneven, irregular terrain as it pertains to ditches, hillsides, embankments, and rocky landscape. Also includes walking in various temperatures and weather conditions such as snow and ice.
  • Performs cutting, drilling, grinding, and welding functions of rail and track components in a safe and proper manner. Makes necessary inspections, repairs, and cleans, lubricates any and all rail and rail appurtenances to include, but not limited to, switches, frogs, and grade crossings.
  • Performs all job duties, including, but not limited to: the operation of RTD vehicles, tools, and equipment in a safe and proper manner.
  • Serves as a switch tender or flag person to protect the public, RTD employees, and/or RTD equipment during emergencies, maintenance operations, and re-routing of rail vehicles as directed.
  • Performs intensive manual labor involving all aspects of track maintenance.
  • Removes snow, ice, and debris from rail switches, drainage ditches, storm drains, and right-of-way.

Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Must obtain and maintain a current valid Colorado Commercial Driver's License with an air brake endorsement (CDL Class A).
  • Must be at least nineteen (19) years of age.
  • Must pass a RTD required Physical Ability Asssessment (PAA) related to the physical requirements of the essential functions of the job.
  • Must pass a Department of Transportation (DOT) physical examination by obtaining a DOT Medical Examiner's Certificate for a minimum of a 1-year qualifying period and maintain a current DOT Medical Examiner's Certificate thereafter.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license continually for the past 2 years. No DUI, DWI, or reckless driving in the past 5 years.

  • An equivalent combination of education, experience, knowledge, skills, abilities, and other characteristics consistent with the required qualifications as determined in the job analysis
Knowledge, Skills And Abilities
  • Ability to efficiently manage time and workload, which includes planning, prioritizing, organizing, and following-through on a variety of tasks, assignments, projects, and reports.
  • Ability to read and understand safety labels and operating instructions.
  • Ability to stand and sit for an extended length of time and walk long distances for long periods of time on uneven terrain to include railroad ballast and icy ground.
  • Ability to complete all necessary reports and work orders in a legible and timely manner.
  • Demonstrated ability to bend, stoop, reach, twist, climb and work at heights up to 20 feet, access confined areas, push/pull up to 125 pounds, lift/carry up to 80 pounds, and horizontally move equipment weighing up to 90 pounds.
  • Ability to use prudent judgment and problem solving skills to make reasonable and appropriate decisions and recommendations that ensures the safety of operations and assists the RTD in meeting its mission.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, which can include working various days, hours, and shifts.
  • Ability to communicate with tact and diplomacy, both orally and in writing, using proper spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
  • Ability to pay close attention to detail, ensuring safety in work and rail operations.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a diverse workforce.
  • Ability to stay alert and aware of surrounding operating environment.
  • Ability to work in a standard maintenance environment, which can include, but is not limited to, working with dust, dirt, gravel, fumes, exhaust, various noise levels, various temperatures, and chemicals for an extended length of time as well as in various outdoor, sometimes extreme, weather conditions as required.
  • Ability to follow directions with minimal supervision.
  • Knowledge of and the ability to properly use personal protective equipment in rail maintenance as related to drilling, cutting, grinding and welding.
  • Ability to take initiative and be a contributing, professional member of a work team.
  • Knowledge of track geometry standards.
  • Knowledge of general railway safety practices.
Pay Range
$30.87 - $34.93 Hourly
