Departmental Overview
The Space Sciences Laboratory (SSL) is an Organized Research Unit (ORU) of the Berkeley campus reporting to the Vice Chancellor for Research. SSL's primary goal is to foster research in space-related sciences and to provide education for the next generation of space scientists. Research at SSL, led by Berkeley faculty and SSL Senior Fellows, focuses on experiments and observations carried out in space as well as theoretical and basic research.
The Role
The Space Sciences Lab is looking for an electrical assembly technician to join the electrical assembly group who assemble and build instrumentation for NASA instruments. The successful candidate will have excellent hand soldering skills, and have experience with a wide range of assembly techniques including harnessing and polymerics. Having a current certification in J-STD or similar is ideal but candidates with lapsed certs or ones with equivalent skill level are encouraged to apply.

Responsibilities
Under general supervision, assembles and tests instrumentation of moderate complexity for novel laboratory equipment and instruments.
Under general supervision, carries out technical work such as board soldering sub component assembly and hardness production to NASA standards.
Completes and analyzes data; prepares formal engineering reports, drawings and status reports from the assembly work.
Assists with implementation of testing sub components once assembled as needed. with test set ups and monitors data from tests and test facility equipment status.
Required Qualifications
Working knowledge of electrical and mechanical engineering assembly principles and methods in order to independently perform professional design work of limited scope and complexity.
Working knowledge necessary to begin independent application of principles, practices and procedures in the completion of assignments in the field of technical assembly of instrumentation to NASA standards.
Organizational abilities and decision-making to prioritize work assignments.
Effective written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to work in a collaborative manner, to assist in identifying any challenges or barriers.
Good soldering, polymetric and harness assembly skills to NASA standards
Education / Training Requirements
Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training

Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.
The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $74,300.00 - $134,500.00.
This is a full-time (40 hours/week), career position, and eligible for full UC benefits.
This is an exempt, monthly paid position.
The annual salary is commensurate with experience within the budgeted range.
