The Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) is an independent research center at the University of Washington. Its mission is to deliver to the world timely, relevant, and scientifically valid evidence to improve health policy and practice. IHME carries out its mission through a range of projects within different research areas including the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors; Future Health Scenarios; Cost Effectiveness and Efficiency; Resource Tracking; and Impact Evaluations. IHME has an outstanding opportunity for two Technical Project Manager positions. One on our Enterprise Data Management team and the other on our Central Computation team. The Enterprise Data Management team works to reduce the mechanical work in producing research results by identifying and resolving pain points through engineering and training and reducing data movement within environments. The Central Computation team is responsible for developing disease and risk factor modeling software, data analysis pipelines, and database tools that interface with up to 1 PB of data across dozens of databases and a network file system. Central Computation’s culture is ambitious, innovative, and collaborative. Specifically, these positions will focus on development of tools supporting data collaboration with institutional partners.
The Technical Project Manager must navigate multiple teams and complex project logistics while remaining focused on key details of the research deliverables to facilitate effective coordination between teams in order to achieve deadlines. They must develop an understanding of the key elements of the Data Engineering projects that they will be tasked with driving to success. The individual will need to monitor adherence to project communication protocols, track progress against deadlines, and help to resolve roadblocks. The TPM facilitates strong communication among Functional and Technology teams, schedules and orchestrates meetings, and manages action item lists that result from them. They must be able to communicate well with individuals from a variety of backgrounds, cultures, and knowledge bases. Most importantly, the TPM must carry out their responsibilities with a high degree of accuracy, timeliness, and awareness to help flag priorities and potential problems in order to find solutions that keep the project progressing on tight timelines. This position is contingent upon project funding availability.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Project Coordination
  • Work within the team to understand and communicate goals and products to be delivered to determine associated tasks.
  • Understand project work plan and translate that plan into tasks.
  • Understand and flag dependencies to be managed across teams.
  • Track progress in order to quickly and accurately identify issues that must be resolved in order to meet deadlines.
  • Prepare JIRA board for sprint planning. Track bugs, feature requests, and resolution of user issues.
  • Provide status updates to stakeholders and request required information.
  • Coordinate release of new versions of central software and tools.
  • Utilize project management tools to ensure high-quality and timely technical coordination.
  • Facilitate meetings, devise and track follow-up action item lists, and maintain key meeting documentation.
  • Act as a point of contact throughout IHME between technical and non-technical staff.
    Team Management
  • Work across supervisory structures to ensure work is properly prioritized.
  • Coordinate tasks across team, and track progress across deliverables.
  • Ensure the team works effectively with other groups at IHME; promote cross-organization teamwork.
    Research Learning
  • As needed, develop baseline understanding of epidemiological modeling principles.
  • Understand how the software native to IHME’s modeling endeavor maps to specific research objectives.
  • Become fluent with existing project management software used across projects.

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
  • Bachelor’s degree in social sciences, mathematics, computer science, or related field and three years’ experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
    Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.

  • Ability to communicate effectively and establish credibility with technical and non-technical stakeholders including executive staff.
  • Strong systems thinking and problem-solving experience.
  • Must exhibit strong desire and ability to learn new intellectual content across different disciplines in a timely fashion.
  • Strong sense of focus and attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated organizational skills, self-motivation, flexibility, strong communication skills, and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced, energetic, highly creative, entrepreneurial environment.

    DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Statistics and/or public health interest.
  • Developer experience, including writing, testing, and deploying code.
  • Experience leading teams to deliver projects with multiple dependencies and constraints.
  • Experience with Agile development methodologies.

  • Weekend and evening work sometimes required.
  • This position is open to anyone authorized to work in the US. The UW is not able to sponsor visas for staff positions.
  • Office is located in Seattle, Washington. This position is eligible to work fully remote in the US.
