Job Description

Title:TechnicalProject Manager

Location:Irvine, CA (100% Remote)

Duration: 12+ Months


Contractor Work Location:

100% remote is OK but hybrid (come to campus if needed) is preferred


Key Responsibilities:

  • Must independently manage variety of technical projects from inception to closing.
  • Good judgment in identifying concerns that require support vs. escalation.
  • Identify stakeholders, facilitate requirements analysis and fit-gap sessions, recording key functional requirements and group decisions.
  • Daily/Weekly responsibilities:
  • Ability to manage multiple projects.
  • Document all decisions related to newly defined procedures.
  • Organizes and leads activities relating to the execution of project deliverables and mitigation/resolution of risk/issues.
  • Longer term contract engagements and/or employment experience indicating full cycle responsibility and completion of projects.
  • Interacts with senior internal and external personnel.
  • Oversees the project from initiation to closing including system integration and setup of post-delivery operational support and maintenance; for vendor implementation projects, act as UCI’s single point of contact in interaction with vendors and managing risk/issues.
  • Applies skills as a seasoned, experienced technical project management professional with a full understanding of project management framework, relevant policies and procedures to resolve a wide range of issues.
  • Exceptional stakeholder management with strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Extensive experience developing and managing detailed project plans, scope, budget, resources, risk, and issues.
  • Ability to apply critical thinking in a methodical and logical manner to solve problems.
  • Has overall project management responsibility.
  • Document and track detailed meeting minutes for every project meeting including identified action items, risks, and issues.
  • Manages projects of diverse scope, size, impact, and budget and/or project team size.
  • Collaborates with project teams in an effective and collaborative manner to meet project deliverables with the goal of completing the project on schedule and within budget constraints.
  • Experience managing vendor software/system implementation projects.
  • Must employ and/or adapt industry standard project management methodologies to fit the needs of the organization and project.
  • Strong sense of ownership and accountability for assigned projects.
  • Assembles and supports moderate to large project teams, develops detailed project charter and schedule, develops budget, and resource requirements.
  • Executive level project sponsorship and interaction.

Experience Skillset Required:

  • Strong ability leading colleagues and stakeholders to define project objectives, scope, milestones, and critical success factors and gates for moving from phase to phase.
  • Demonstrated attention to detail.
  • Understands the cost impact of projects, project tracking tools and metrics.
  • Demonstrated competency in selecting and implementing project management methods and techniques.
  • Demonstrated ability to put forth persuasive arguments.
  • Demonstrated ability to determine relevance and prioritize tasks.
  • Able to identify project risk and proactively manage it by developing creative solutions and engaging the team to respond.
  • Effective at leading meetings with cross-functional (business users and technical staff) teams. Strong proficiency in MS Project.
  • Proficient in compiling and presenting project status in varying ways to meet the needs and to be understandable by the intended audience.
  • Demonstrated highly advanced organization and project management skills.
  • Effective problem solving skills.
  • Demonstrates excellent communication (verbal and in written) and interpersonal skills to successfully collaborate with a broad range of personnel at all levels across the campus and with varying levels of technical knowledge and/or understanding of project management concepts.
  • Five to ten years relevant experience with BA/BS in related field, or three to five years relevant experience with MA/MS in related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience in Project Management in an IT environment.
  • Effective skill at tracking effort and project progress.
  • Broad knowledge of technology-related initiatives and an understanding of impact to the organization of such initiatives.
  • Demonstrated strong conceptual and planning skills to analyze projects of broad and diverse scope.
  • Proven leadership ability.
  • 5+ years of direct, hands-on IT project management experience.

Required experience:

  • PMP required.

Preferred experience:

  • Knowledge of Smartsheet, Confluence, JIRA or other project scheduling/collaboration tools.
  • CSM, ITIL certifications.

Need seasoned, experienced technical project management professional to manage a campus mandate initiative to implement specific policy compliance on all IT systems owned by Office of Information Technology (OIT).

The project has an implementation deadline of Dec 2023. Based on allocation needs of this project, any unused capacity will be utilized to manage other IT projects in the PMO pipeline.
