Job Description
Position Description
The City of Tacoma's Finance Department, Tax & License Division is recruiting for Tax and License Compliance Officers to enforce the City's Tax and License Code and other related sections of the Tacoma Municipal Code.
Duties Include
  • Educating and communicating with business owners in person, via written correspondence, and over the phone
  • Performing collection activities for delinquent license fees, taxes, and penalties
  • Inspecting businesses to ensure compliance with tax and license requirements
  • Working in partnership with other City departments and regulatory agencies to bring businesses into compliance with local laws when business activities are causing public safety concerns
This position requires office and field work, which includes driving to various locations within the City, performing inspections, collecting delinquent tax and license liabilities and conducting discovery of unlicensed businesses.

Qualifications
An equivalent combination of: Graduation from high school and two (2) years of experience involving collections, complaint investigation or other sensitive public contacts.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience involving code compliance or enforcement
  • Fluency in a language other than English
Licenses, Certificates And Other Requirements
Valid Washington State driver's license with maintenance thereafter. Must obtain a special police commission within probationary period and maintenance thereafter.

Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications will have their responses to the Supplemental Questionnaire scored based on the information provided. It is the responsibility of the applicant to list all pertinent experience and training. Applicants must obtain a passing score to be ranked on the eligible list for interview and hiring consideration.
Appointment is subject to passing a background check. This position is covered by a Labor Agreement between the City of Tacoma and Teamsters Local 117. New employees must successfully complete a nine-month probationary period prior to obtaining permanent status in this classification.

Other Employment Information
Direct Deposit: Employees are paid on a bi-weekly schedule by direct deposit.
Salary Increases: Based on satisfactory job performance, the City provides for a regular progression of salary increases for most classifications according to the salary schedule.
Union Affiliation: Many job classifications are covered by union security provisions which require union membership, dues, or payment of equivalent service fees.
