Job Description
Overview:
Summary

The Mine Surveyor Assistant assists the Senior Surveyor in surveying tasks for the purpose of assessing land and geographic information associated with the mine. This includes operating all surveying equipment and maintaining maps and boundaries.
Responsibilities:
Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Essential duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, any one of the following assigned areas in the absence of the Senior Surveyor:
  • Accurately measures the coal pillar dimension for month end volume calculations.
  • Assists in all underground and surface surveying.
Other Duties/Responsibilities
  • Participates in regular safety meetings.

The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills, and attitudes required for this employment position. Education/Experience

High School or GED

Certification/Licensure
  • Must have valid Illinois State Driver’s License
  • Illinois Mine Examiner Certification Preferred, or ability to obtain by first testing period after hire date

Knowledge of
  • Surveying knowledge and experience is preferred.
  • Operation, installation and maintenance of assigned equipment in a safe and effective manner.
  • Microsoft Word, Excel, ACAD and SURVCADD.
  • All state and federal laws and regulations governing the mining of coal.
  • Safety and health hazards associated with the mining of coal.

Skills, abilities and physical requirements
  • Ability to work unsupervised as required.
  • Strong sense of closure…”complete what you start”.
  • Physical Requirements:
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Stand for 6 to 10 hours on uneven rocky surfaces
  • Ability to clearly communicate with co-workers, supervisors and others.
  • Walk for up to 8 hours at a time in uneven and wet conditions through sections of the mine with varying degrees of clearance and headroom.
  • Ability to read and understand Safety Data Sheets (SDS).
  • Lift up to 70 pounds without mechanical assistance. Work from elevated positions, walk or climb up and down stairways and ladders and climb on and off of equipment and must be able to bend or stoop for a full shift as a result of the mine height.
  • Ability to read and understand mine plans.
  • Ability to clearly communicate in writing.
  • Ability to work overtime as required.
  • Ability to work any assigned shift, including evenings and weekends.
  • Don and wear required safety equipment including SCSR, respirators, hearing and eye protection, and protective clothing.
