Pay Philosophy

The typical starting salary range for this role is determined by a number of factors including skills, experience, education, certifications and location. The full salary range for this role reflects the competitive labor market value for all employees in these positions across the national market and provides an opportunity to progress as employees grow and develop within the role. Some roles at Liberty Mutual have a corresponding compensation plan which may include commission and/or bonus earnings at rates that vary based on multiple factors set forth in the compensation plan for the role.


Description

The Supervisor Underwriting Support role supervises staff members who support the underwriters in achieving a balanced, profitable and quality book of business by performing various pre-underwriting activities gathering data, identifying rates for coverage options, and entering information into databases. This person achieves operational service standards and maintains compliance with regulatory requirements as well as internal policies. This person ensures that the unit develops and maintains effective business relationships with underwriters, internal service partners and external clients.


Responsibilities


  • Maximizes the safety and security of the work environment by having quarterly safety discussions with employees, conducting required ergonomic assessments, monitoring workspaces with hazards/risks, and correcting unsafe work conditions or job design to mitigate workplace hazards.
  • Adheres to Liberty Mutual’s core values and leadership principles.
  • Fosters a collaborative team environment that is conducive to continuous improvement and root cause problem solving activities.
  • Selects, develops and manages a high-performance team that supports the underwriters in achieving a balanced, profitable and quality book of business by performing various pre-underwriting activities, gathering data, identifying rates for coverage options, and entering information into databases.
  • Maintain compliance regulatory requirements as well as internal policies, procedures and processing with all standards works with the Underwriting Management to ensure underwriting files are documented, follow filing protocol and maintain accurate account history.
  • Regularly validates the knowledge and proficiency of team by conducting process confirmations reviewing quality errors and trends, and responding to voice of customer.
  • Acquires, develops, and retains Underwriting Assistant talent. Formally manages, guides and mentors Underwriting Assistants to improve technical and behavioral capabilities.
  • Solves underwriting and regulatory issues, provides input on systems development support and makes recommendations for improvements. Implements with management approval.
  • Collaborates with internal and external business partners to solve opportunities to improve the end-to-end transactional processing cycle.
  • Ensures that the team develops and maintains effective business relationships with internal peers, stakeholders, and business partners.
  • Escalates issues as needed through huddles and problems solving.
  • Ensures that the unit develops and maintains effective business relationships with underwriters, internal partners and external clients fosters and environment of collaboration and partnership with peers, Distribution, Underwriting, Claims and other areas.
  • Directs the day-to-day support operations of the support staff by establishing priorities, reviewing territory assignments, redirecting work when needed and assisting others with resolving problems in order to meet established operations service standard (e.g., Operational objectives, Billing instructions, Policy Writing Instructions, endorsements, submission clearance, etc.).
  • Provides management with input on the development of policies, procedures and guidelines.
Qualifications
  • In-depth knowledge of commercial lines underwriting products and processes.
  • Ability to get work done through others (delegate), communicate effectively (including listening, writing clearly, giving constructive feedback, etc.), get support from above, plan/organize work, analyze and solve problems, focus on the larger picture as normally acquired through a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience and experience supporting a commercial lines underwriting operation.
  • Intermediate knowledge of property and or casualty insurance coverage, risk analysis/selection, risk assessment, rating procedures, rating plans and systems/workflow, pricing and MS Excel/Word.
