Responsible under the general direction of the Chief Pathologist and the Director for all functions in their respective laboratory sections. Performs and teaches all tests in the discipline. May also function as a technologist in performing necessary diagnostic procedures and is responsible for filling in for the Director in his/her absence. The Laboratory sections are defined as follows:
Chemistry and Special Chemistry; Hematology and Phlebotomy; Blood Bank/Coagulation/Urinalysis; Microbiology/Serology.

Responsibilities:
A day in the life of a Supervisor, Laboratory Pathology at Hackensack Meridian Health includes:
  • Responsible for accurate documentation of all work, maintenance and evaluation performed within the section.
  • Ensures delivery of excellent customer service resulting in positive and improving patient satisfaction scores for department and Medical Center.
  • Trains subordinates to insure proper level of proficiency.
  • Performs all diagnostic procedures as necessary.
  • Introduces and evaluates new procedures in the field (discipline) and reports them to the Director and Chief Pathologist.
  • Continually monitors and documents all patient results generated within the section including work performed on evening/night and weekend shifts.
  • Responsible for the availability and maximum proficiency of all personnel, equipment, and supplies involved in the operation of the section, this includes all shifts.
  • Responsible for the Quality Control Program of the section it supervises. Collect and review Quality Control reports, initiate corrective action if needed.
  • Sets up and runs all new tests/procedures after complete and satisfactory review. Communicates all changes (in writing) to the Director.
Supplemental Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Attends local or national meetings/seminars as approved, to maintain current in the field.
  • Responsible for maintaining a clean, well organized and safe environment within the section.
  • Interviews applicants for open positions and employees requesting transfer to the section.
  • Attends monthly supervisory meetings within the department and other Hospital meetings as required.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Counsels employees concerning performance problems, section procedures, work rules, and hospital policies.
  • Disciplines employees for violating rules or poor performance.
  • Maintains documented Quality Assurance in all aspects of operation within the section (s).
  • Periodically supervises other Laboratory sections in absence of the Director.
  • Schedules employees to insure proper staffing coverage in the section.
  • Reviews and revised existing methods and procedures annually.
Qualifications:
EDUCATION:
  • ASCP certified or eligible
  • Possess current active registry in Medical Technology or the appropriate subspeciality i.e.: Chemistry, Microbiology, Hematology, Blood Bank
  • Degree in Medical Technology or equivalent category, i.e. B.S. Clinical Chemistry, Microbiology
WORK EXPERIENCE:
  • Three years hospital laboratory experience required, one of which should have been in a supervisory capacity
