Description

Supervises laboratory staff, and all analytical operations conducted by the Kansas City Analytical Laboratory.

Will be responsible for, and must demonstrate training, experience, and aptitude in the following areas:

  • Coordinating and administering tier 2 laboratory equipment maintenance and repair programs.
  • Interpreting test data for internal and external customers. Suggesting testing schemes that will adequately address quality control issues.
  • Mentoring, leadership, and professional development of laboratory staff.
  • Ensuring safe and environmentally conscientious operation of the laboratory according to and in compliance with SIP - Magellan's systematic risk-management program - as well as with all local, state, and federal laws.
  • Designing, quoting, and managing research projects and customized testing programs.
  • Administering existing testing programs for internal and external customers. Coordinating laboratory staff and other resources to ensure timely and accurate test results are always obtained.
  • Coordinating services from IT support staff and other resources to maintain and continuously improve LMS system, integrate new equipment (and old equipment) into the LMS, and continuously improve all lab reporting and monitoring functionality.
  • Providing tier 1 laboratory equipment maintenance and repair.
  • Working constructively with other stakeholders, including the Quality Assurance group, the commercial business team, IT support staff, and safety and environmental specialists.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for coordinating with QC Technician Field Chemist and outside technicians for all maintenance and repairs of laboratory instruments.
  • Mentors and supervises lab technicians in the execution of Quality Programs. Responsible for direction of work, daily supervision, employee evaluation, establishing goals, coaching and professional development, counseling, and disciplinary actions when necessary. Responsible for knowing and following the CBA for the USW employees.
  • Stays current with ASTM testing methodologies and keeps abreast of changes in ASTM; attends at least 1 ASTM each calendar year. Reviews Lab SOPs annually to make sure they still are consistent with ASTM requirements.
  • Monitors mechanical systems equipment for laboratory building and coordinates service and repair.
  • Coordinates projects for continuous improvement of the laboratory, and develops and administers operating processes to improve productivity and ensure quality of laboratory operations.
  • Ensures safe and environmentally conscientious operation of the laboratory according to and in compliance with Magellan’s SIP, as well as with all local, state and federal laws.
  • Coordinates and manages the FuelSQC testing required to maintain compliance with EPA required testing.
  • Manages research projects requested by internal groups (QC or Commercial) or outside agencies such as National Bio-diesel Board or Renewable Energy Group.

Qualifications

  • A minimum of five years of job-related experience required
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field of study is preferred
