The San Diego Unified School District is accepting applications for Substitute Teachers for in-person instruction only.
Please note that on 9/28/2021, the Board of Education mandated the COVID-19 vaccination as a requirement for employment.
This pool is for individuals who only wish to substitute for in-person instruction. If you wish to be considered for full-time or part-time positions, please apply to the appropriate pool.
Applicants must have a valid California teaching credential or a 30 day emergency permit.
If you have not applied for a California teaching credential, please remember that as of January 1, 2017, you must hold a Certificate of Clearance prior to applying for your credential. Visit the CCTC website (Download PDF reader) for more information.
Substitutes may provide instruction when a regular teacher is absent, may provide supervision for Learning Labs, and/or may support small group instruction. All substitutes will work in-person at a school site with students present.
Credential Requirements
- A valid California teaching credential or emergency substitute permit
San Diego Unified School District offers different daily rates of pay for visiting teachers (substitutes) depending on the length of the assignment and the number of days a visiting teacher works in year.
- Established Day-to-Day visiting teacher daily rate: $275.00
- Day-to-day visiting teacher daily rate: $250.00
- Long-term visiting teachers (those who complete more than five consecutive days in a single assignment): daily rate of $300.00
Application Process:
To be eligible for consideration, interested candidates must submit the following:
- On-line employment application
- A copy of written reference letters within the last two years is desirable. Required documents must be attached to the online employment application to be considered. The supplemental questions should be answered thoroughly, clearly and concisely as the responses provided (along with the entire application package) will be carefully reviewed to determine which candidates will move forward in the recruitment process. Please complete the online application to include all current and previous paid work history and education. Indicate on the application if you have unpaid volunteer or internship experience. The length of time you worked in each position or assignment must be clearly shown. A resume must be attached, but it does not substitute for completing the work history and education sections of the employment application.
- A copy of a valid teaching credential.

- Contact information for three professional references must be listed under the 'References' section of the application. References should be from a current or previous supervisor. We will be reaching out to your professional reference contacts in the screening process of this application.

Examination Process

The examination process will consist of an application screening based on the candidate's education, work history and responses to the supplemental questions. Professional References will be contacted for candidates that are selected to proceed in the examination process. Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications are not guaranteed advancement through any subsequent phase of the examination. Candidates selected to proceed in the examination process will be invited to an interview. Applicants who pass the examination process will be placed on an eligible list for a period of one year. The eligible list will be used to fill vacancies at various school sites.

Applicants considered for employment must successfully complete the following background investigation/tests:
- Tuberculosis Screening/Test
- Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Criminal History Investigation
