Minimum Requirements:

High School diploma or its equivalent AND completion of an approved apprenticeship program AND four (4) years of experience as a structural steel iron worker OR six (6) years of experience as a structural steel iron worker. A certificate in welding is required.


A valid class C PA Driver’s License is required prior to appointment.


It is the policy of Allegheny County that in order to receive a final offer of employment, candidates must successfully pass a background check, which includes verification of Allegheny County Real Estate Tax status, and drug/medical examinations as required for the position.


Additionally, it is the policy of Allegheny County that in order to receive a final offer of employment, candidates for positions within the executive branch must provide proof of a Covid-19 vaccination. The prospective employee will need to be fully vaccinated or have at least one shot of a two-shot series before beginning work. Any employee who does not receive and provide proof of the second shot within 30 days will have their probationary employment terminated. Allegheny County will allow for medical and religious exemptions from the requirements in accordance with state and federal law.



Position Summary:

The incumbent performs skilled structural ironworker tasks following standard practices of the trade. Work involves the construction, dismantling, maintenance, and repair of iron and steel structures, the use of rigging, lifting, moving, and placing heavy timbers and steel members. The employee receives detailed instructions and works under the close supervision of a foreman.



Duties:
  • Dismantles, constructs, and repairs small county bridges.
  • Bolts, rivets, and welds structural members.
  • Repairs and maintains heavy equipment.
  • Performs related work/duties.
  • Repairs and maintains light and water towers.
  • Installs and ties reinforcing bars for construction projects.
  • Erects and dismantles scaffolding in connection with repair work.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Knowledge of:
  • Methods, practices, materials, tools, and equipment of the structural iron worker’s trade
  • Erection and dismantling of scaffolding and rigging
  • Occupational hazards and safety precautions required in the work

Ability to:
  • Navigate uneven walking surfaces in varying field conditions.
  • Tolerate construction noise, with or without protective equipment.
  • Work in varying weather conditions.
  • Work a flexible schedule at any County location.
  • Use motorized equipment such as jackhammers, riveters, power saws, grinders, and welding and burning equipment.
  • Weld pipes and perform MIG welding.
  • Climb and work at considerable heights.
  • Work well with others and take directions.
  • Complete assignments in a timely manner.
  • Lift and carry approximately 50-100 lbs.
  • Follow policies and procedures of the Public Works Department
