WHAT WE CAN ACHIEVE TOGETHER


The Stewardship Field Assistant is a member of the Maryland/DC Chapter's Land Management Team, a group of conservation professionals entrusted with the care of The Nature Conservancy's lands in Maryland for the benefit of nature and people. This includes ecological, legal and visitor facilities management at 13 preserves in western Maryland, and management of conservation easements on private lands. The Land Managment Team also builds partnerships by assisting with restoration and study on partner land. The Stewardship Field Assistant is also part of the chapter's Science Team and its Resilient Forests Program. The pay for this position is commensurate with skills and exprience in the range of $22.00-$26.00 an hour.

Not only will you contribute to the organization's conservation mission in Maryland's portion of the globally significant Appalachian Mountains, but you'll also have the chance to grow through TNC's global network of practitioners! We're looking for a passionate, dedicated person who will thrive in a culture of collaboration and collective impact. The Stewardship Field Assistant is a member of the Land Management Team primarily responsible for land, facilities and equipment management on properties throughout Maryland's western region. You will participate in maintenance, management and monitoring at The Nature Conservancy preserves and partner sites in Maryland's western region. You will assist with land management activities including trail repair and building, tree planting, tree removal, seed collection, mowing, prescribed burning, building and boundary maintenance, and invasive species control (including pesticide application). As a part of the Maryland/DC Chapter's Science Team, The Field Assistant also assists with field data collection and data management for research, forest inventory, hydrological monitoring and biological monitoring projects. Public relations work includes leading preserve tours, and interacting with neighbors, hunters and easement landowners.

This permanent, full-time position occasionally requires irregular hours and includes extensive outdoor physical labor under adverse conditions. The Stewardship Field Assistant does not supervise other permanent staff, but may supervise volunteers, seasonal field crews and interns. This position has office space in the Conservancy's Cumberland office or the employee may work from a home office. This position requires occasional travel to the chapter's main field office in Bethesda or other locations in Maryland (or the region) for all-staff events, and help will occasionally be requested at other preserves in Maryland.

WHAT YOU'LL BRING


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience operating equipment in a safe and efficient manner (e.g. lawn mower, chainsaw, tractor, two-way radio).
  • Must have valid driver's license and good driving record.
  • Experience with natural systems.
  • Must be able to pass wildland firefighter Pack Test.
  • Experience with ecological land management principles.
  • BA/BS/AS/Technical or vocational degree in science-related field and 1 year related experience.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Abiltity to work in a team environment.
  • Multi-lingual skills and multi-cultural experience appreciated.
  • Qualification as a FFT 1 or SRB (see http://www.tncfiremanual.org/Firefighter.htm), and experience participating in prescribed fires or wildfires.
  • Experience, coursework, or other training in GPS and GIS.
  • Experience in herbicide application.
  • Experience, coursework, or other training in conservation practices, land management, forestry and/or natural resource conservation and/or science.
  • Ability to manage time and diverse activites under deadlines while delivering quality results.
  • Ability to work independently in remote locations.
  • Ability to represent the Conservancy in a positive manner to partners and the public.
  • Ability to provide your own transporation when necessary, with mileage reimbursed.
  • Ability to identiy eastern US native and invasive plants.
