Job Description
Under the direction of the Director, the Sterile Processing Supervisor will carry out the responsibilities for the overall work flow of the shift in Sterile Processing. Directs, plans, and organizes the staff and activities of the Sterile Processing department. Ensures that best practices related to decontamination, sterilization, preparing and packaging of instruments are adhered to by staff. The Supervisor utilizes key performance indicators for trending areas in need of improvement.


Job Functions


  • Initiates coaching and positive disciplinary actions as necessary.
  • Collaborates with department leadership team to identify improvement needs and monitor quality indicators. Gathers information, selects the best strategy, implements and evaluates decisions to assure continuous improvement and contribution to the long-term best interest of CCHs.
  • Demonstrates decision making/problem solving skills.
  • Responds to quality issues with OR and other departmental customers.
  • Oversees monthly schedule and coordinates daily shift staffing needs consistent with unit staffing plan and budget.
  • Monitors preventive maintenance of equipment and instrumentation.
  • Provides on the floor supervision of department specific to assigned shift.
  • Provides on-going feedback to staff concerning performance and collaborates with department manager in completing annual performance reviews.
  • Maintains technical competence and SPD technician skill set.
  • Oversees flow of work and production volume to ensure instrumentation is available for customers.
  • Monitors staff execution of standard work holding staff accountable for work quantity/quality and adherence to safety standards.
  • Monitors all unit quality measures including sterilization records, case cart completion and regulatory compliance standards.
  • Monitors loaner tray processing for next day and coordinates all vendor issues with the goal of monitoring loaner tray inventory.
  • Promotes high levels of staff engagement, performance, and retention.
  • Identifies individual staff orientation and ongoing learning needs and coordinates individual learning plan with SPD instructor.
  • Demonstrates ability to provide necessary leadership to employees in assigned area
  • Maintains awareness of standards and changes within health care and SPD industry.
  • Provides supervision of day to day business operations of the unit


Requirements Minimum Acceptable Training And Experience


  • High school graduate required. Some college or college level courses preferred
  • Instrument Specialist Certification preferred
  • Progressive leadership experience preferred.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of SPD experience required.
  • Sterile Processing Technician IAHCSMM or CBSPD Certification is required.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted.
