POSITION TYPE: Temporary, EHRA, 1.0 FTE (full-time), 11 month appointment, FLSA Exempt

HOURLY RATE: $33.93

The primary purpose of the position is to develop a STEM career mentoring program, delivered primarily virtually, for high school students that supports participants in NCSSM outreach programming and/or students in rural or underserved communities. Description of Duties:

This candidate will design a pilot year of a virtual STEM career mentoring program and suggest or begin implementation of expansion of a virtual STEM career mentoring program beyond the pilot year. Including:

  • Create and implement training for mentors.
  • Support recruitment of career mentors from established partners or new partners.
  • Create and implement training for mentees.
  • Provide social media, in-person, and virtual recruitment for outreach programming year round.
  • Recruit student participants for the career mentoring program.

During the program, this candidate will provide one-on-one holistic college, career, and academic advising to any student or family seeking assistance, primarily delivered virtually. They will develop a support model of required or optional resources for college and career planning and continued academic engagement to enter and succeed in postsecondary education immediately after high school. They will also support program operations such as:

  • Implement and model best practices for mentoring youth and youth mentoring programs and assessing the efficacy of the program.
  • Write reports and maintain the program budget; communicating to stakeholders in industry and education.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of the virtual STEM career mentoring program.
  • Ensure programming complies with minor compliance policies of NCSSM or partners.

This candidate will collaborate with Extended Learning program staff, other NCSSM staff, and external partners or consultants to pilot development of a virtual STEM career mentoring program. This may include:

  • Support participants at NCSSM Durham, NCSSM Morganton, or other locations in NC in the INSPIRE, Step Up to STEM, or other NCSSM summer outreach programs supporting underserved or underrepresented students. Assist other Extended Learning Program projects in STEM Outreach and building professional skills and career awareness in youth.
  • Establish and maintain partnerships with schools and school districts engaged in NCSSM’s outreach programming

The position may be eligible for a hybrid/flexible work schedule. This position requires the availability to work occasional extended in-state travel and regularly some evenings and weekends.

Candidates must possess a valid driver’s license with no serious driving-related convictions.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Experiences with mentoring, teaching, and/or coaching youth in grades 7-12 or opportunity youth age 16-24.

Proven experience with assessing potential barriers and developing strategies to recruit and support a diverse student population.

Strong written and oral communication skills. Ability to connect with a wide variety of constituents.

Demonstrated ability to prioritize and manage multiple project deliverables.

Enthusiasm to build relationships with a wide variety of constituents virtually with occasional face-to-face interaction.

Experience implementing successful instruction, training, or workshops virtually.

Background or education in a field of STEM or experience working in a STEM industry

Experience in designing, developing and providing instruction to grades 7-12 or opportunity youth age 16-24 in professional or career skills.

Experience in working independently and collaboratively to implement or support a program.

Minimum Education and Experience:

Minimum of a bachelor’s degree required with relevant professional experience in providing academic or career counseling in secondary or post secondary education settings.
