About the Agency

The Illinois Department of Corrections is seeking a well-qualified tradesman to serve as a Stationary Engineer. This position will serve the facility’s powerhouse by observing and reading gauges and meters, maintains appropriate logbooks, and will help schedule powerhouse staff. Job Responsibilities

  • Serves as designated lead worker. Assigns and reviews work. Provides guidance and training to assigned staff. Advises immediate supervisor regarding performance of staff.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of duties enumerated above.
  • Helps prepare detailed equipment and service specifications and estimates for needed repairs or replacements. Prepares and submits information to supervisor once completed.
  • Prepares schedules for power plant staff. Reviews and prepares necessary mechanical reports. Lays out and schedules necessary built-in repairs and shutdowns to ensure maximum operation and the least possible emergency situation.
  • Conducts rounds of power plant at regular- intervals. Observes and reads gauges and meters and makes adjustments as necessary. Maintains logbooks, recording pressure gauge readings, fuel consumed, and work completed. Serves as designated lead worker. Assigns and reviews work. Provides guidance and training to assigned staff. Advises immediate supervisor regarding performance of staff.
  • Operates, administers, and maintains the operation of the facility’s powerhouse. Supervises, directs, and evaluates work assignments of individual in custody workers assigned to the plant. Directs the installation, alteration, repair, maintenance and operation of the boilers, furnaces, stokers, blowers, flow meters, pumps, compressors, generators, and turbines.
  • Tests and records results of tests for water used. Adds water purifying or softening chemicals as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Requires four (4) years of experience in power plant operation and in firing high pressure and/or low pressure stationary boilers.
  • Requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to completion of eight (8) years elementary school.

Preferred Qualifications (In Order of Significance)

  • Prefers proof of completing an apprenticeship in one of the following, Boilermakers, Pipefitters, Steamfitters.
  • Prefers proof of an EPA 608 Universal Technician Certification.
  • Prefers proof of a Stationary Engineer License issued by the City of Chicago.
  • Prefers four (4) years of experience in the operation of and routine/preventive maintenance of boiler feed water treatment systems.
  • Prefers four (4) years of experience maintaining daily logs on boiler operation, boiler water treatment, boiler water testing, generator operation and state water surveys.
  • Prefers four (4) years of experience in the operation of and routine/preventive maintenance of emergency power generators.
  • Prefers four (4) years of experience in firing high pressure and/or low-pressure boilers.
  • Prefers proof of completing a 30hr OSHA safety program.
  • Prefers four (4) years of experience in routine/preventive maintenance on pumps, boilers, compressors, water heaters, valves, electronic and pneumatic controls.

Conditions of Employment

1. Requires ability to pass the IDOC/IDJJ background check.
2. Requires the ability to pass a drug screen. On January 1, 2020, the Cannabis Regulation and Tax Act made it legal for residents over the age of 21 to produce, consume and sell cannabis in Illinois. Please note that although the law has changed, the Department will continue to enforce the Department’s zero tolerance Drug testing policy. The use of unauthorized drugs, including cannabis by an employee, regardless of the position held is prohibited.
