Class Concept

Minimum Qualifications:
Master's Degree in Pharmacy required supplemented by two years of experience as a Licensed Pharmacist.
Specific License or Certification Required: Must possess and maintain a valid License as a Pharmacist in the State of Georgia.
Specific Knowledge, Skills, or Abilities: Must be able to demonstrate proficiency in performance of the essential functions and learn, comprehend, and apply all county or departmental policies, practices, and procedures necessary to function effectively in the position.

Example of Duties

Purpose of Classification:
The purpose of this classification is to perform duties related to serving patients by dispensing medications following prescriptions issued by physicians, giving pharmacological information to multidisciplinary health care team members, and monitoring patient drug therapies.
Essential Functions:
The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.
Dispenses medications as prescribed by physicians by reviewing and interpreting physician prescriptions and orders: Reviews prescriptions and physician orders to assure accuracy and to detect therapeutic incompatibilities; performs quality assurance inspections on the emergency carts and the medication dispensing units; and dispenses medications by counting, packaging, and labeling pharmaceuticals.
Checks and labels pre-packaged medications: Ensures pharmacy regulations are followed while prepackaging large quantities of medication; performs and documents accuracy checks on the Pill Counter before starting the prepackaging process; communicates with Pharmacy Technician to ensure designated medications are prepackaged, labeled, checked and ready for dispensing; and initials the prepackaging log after checking prepackaged medications.
Performs quality assurance activities: Performs weekly physical inventories on the medication-dispensing units verifying medication quantities, expiration dates; rotates medications with the dispensing unit per pharmacy rules and regulations; checks emergency cart previously stocked by the Pharmacy on a monthly basis for the quantities, documentation of use and expiration dates; utilizes proper disposal and replacement techniques for items within 3 months of expiration; documents and reports discrepancies identified while performing checks; and reviews patient medication lists for therapy duplication, drug interactions, etc. and discusses results with clinicians as needed.
Complies with state and federal drug laws as regulated by the state board of pharmacy, the drug enforcement administration, and the food and drug administration; maintains current registration and licensing of pharmacy; and advises management on needed actions.
Provides pharmacological information: Answers questions and requests of health care professionals; counsels patients on drug therapies; and provides information and advice regarding drug interactions, side effects, dosage and proper medication storage.
Provides a final check of certain orders prepared by the Pharmacy Technician including medications to be restocked into the medication dispensing units, medications to be couriered to the County Health Centers when needed and Directly-Observed Therapy (DOT) TB med orders when needed.
Maintain records, such as pharmacy files, patient profiles, and inventories: Enters all patient and prescription information in computer system; prints semi-annual and annual reports generated from prescription information in computer system; prints patient prescription history reports upon patient request; reviews accuracy checks and prepackaging logs for completeness; documents all medication transactions into Pharmacy Notebook as they occur; reconciles the Pharmacy Notebook and notifies the Pharmacy Supervisor of any discrepancies; performs periodic review of the medication formulary and methods used to distribute and order pharmacy supplies and medications; works with IT Department to generate reports and evaluate pharmacy software; and works with pharmacy software company to update software.
Performs activities to assist patients with financial limitations to be able to obtain needed prescriptions: Assists with implementation of Patient Assistance ProgamWork with PHNT to help patients sign up for Patient Assistance Program; researches the issues involved when patient has no patient assistance medicines in the pharmacy; and calls manufacturers and fills out forms to order more patient assistance medicines for patients enrolled in the program.
Maintains licensure and participates in continuing education activities: Maintains pharmacological knowledge by attending educational workshops, reviewing professional publications, establishing personal networks, and participating in professional societies.
Orders and purchases pharmaceutical supplies, and drugs: Maintains stock and storing and handles items properly; protects patients by adhering to infection control protocols; removes outdated and damaged drugs from the pharmacy inventory and sets aside for returns to be processed by a Return Goods Company; and maintains a safe and clean working environment by complying with procedures, rules and regulations.

Equipment, Machinery, Tools, and Materials Utilization: Requires the ability to operate, maneuver, and/or control the actions of equipment, machinery, tools and/or materials requiring complex and/or rapid adjustments such as a computer and peripherals, automobile and various medical devices (e.g. stethoscope, syringes and needles).
Verbal Aptitude: Requires the ability to utilize consulting and advisory data and information, as well as reference, descriptive and/or design data and information as applicable such as medical information and protocols, program reports, medication lists, medication refill requests, textbooks, advisories, laws and regulations and a variety of correspondence.
Mathematical Aptitude: Requires the ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication and division; ability to calculate decimals and percentages; may include ability to perform mathematical operations involving basic algebraic principles and formulas, and basic geometric principles and calculations.
Functional Reasoning: Requires the ability to apply principles of logical or synthesis functions; to deal with several concrete and abstract variables; and to analyze major problems that require complex planning,
Situational Reasoning: Requires the ability to exercise judgment, decisiveness and creativity in critical and/or unexpected situations involving moderate risk to the organization.
