Job Description
Facility: Mercy Hospital of Buffalo
Shift: Shift 1
Status: Part Time w/Benefits FTE: 0.500000

Work Schedule: Days with Weekend and Holiday Rotation
Hours
7AM-3PM, variable start/end times (5am-8pm), 7.5 hrs./shift, 37.5 hours per pay period.
Summary
Performs a variety of duties involving MR patient imaging, scanner instrumentation and contrast agent preparation, according to guidelines set forth by NYSDOH, JCAHO, OSHA, and the Mercy Hospital Imaging Services Department. Rotation to outpatient clinic sites is required. Performs after hours and weekend emergency calls. Can perform all the duties of a staff MRI Technologist after post-hire training. After post-hire training, technologist is expected to perform magnetic resonance (MRI) procedures at a proficient level, not requiring constant supervision of technical detail.
Responsibilities
EDUCATION
  • New York State license as a "General Radiologic Technologist" from the New York State Department of Health via the ARRT registry in Radiography, R.T., (R) (ARRT) certificate of registration as a Radiologic Technologist. Must maintain this primary registration at all times as a Professional Education Requirement to perform MRI and to be eligible for certification/registration in Magnetic Resonance Imaging, (MR) (ARRT), unless candidate is a graduate from a formal accredited/approved school/program of MRI. Eligibility for MRI certification must be established within 2 years of completion of accredited MRI program.
  • The Nuclear Medicine Technologist must have a current Certification by the Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board, (NMTCB). Eligibility for MRI certification must be established within 2 years of hire.
  • Current Certification by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists - Radiologic Technologist Registry (ARRT) (R). Must maintain this primary registration at all times to be eligible for certification and registration in Magnetic Resonance Imaging by the ARRT (ARRT MR), unless candidate is a graduate from a formal accredited/approved school/program of MRI. Eligibility for MRI certification must be established within 2 years of completion of MRI program.
  • BLS Certification.
  • Graduate of an Approved School of Radiologic Technology and/or candidate may be a graduate from an accredited/approved school/program of Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) or an approved/accredited, Bachelor of Science, Nuclear Medicine Technology Program.
  • Technologist must not physically possess any medical/surgical appliances, staples, clips, cardiac pacemakers etc. which are contra-indicated for work in and around the area of a magnetic field. This requirement is in keeping with the established FDA safety guidelines for MR Imaging.
Experience
  • Six (6) months to one (1) year experience as an MRI Tech
  • Pre-Hire Experience-
  • Three (3) to five (5) years working experience as a CT Technologist or Nuclear Medicine Technologist with strong background in cross-sectional anatomy OR
  • Within eighteen (18) months post-hire, employee will attempt to obtain Certification by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists - Magnetic Resonance Imaging Registry (ARRT) (MRI). Nuclear Medicine Technologists will be eligible tobecome registered by the ARRT in MRI once they have performed the necessary number of various MRI procedures required for credentialing.
  • Post-Hire Experience- Within six-(6) months employee should be able to perform MRI procedures in an acceptable manner.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY
  • Knowledge of performing all basic and complex CT, (unless graduate of an approved MRI/Nuclear Medicine (B.S.) program), and MRI (post training period) studies.
  • Thorough knowledge of FDA safety standards regarding ferrous objects, cardiac pacemakers and other contraindicated items upon entering the magnetic field.
  • In depth knowledge of the principles and techniques of spiral CT, (unless graduate of an approved MRI/Nuclear Medicine (B.S.) program), and MRI (post training period) in order to produce high quality scans, maintain the equipment and ensure quality assurance.
  • In depth knowledge of physiology and cross sectional anatomy, including location, appearance and function of various major and minor systems associated with diseases or lesions illustrated by CT, (unless graduate of an approved MRI/Nuclear Medicine (B.S.) program), and MRI (post training period) scanning.
  • Knowledge of basic computer operations, including keyboard input and proper selection of various protocols to scan various anatomical sections.
  • Knowledge of CT, (unless graduate of an approved MRI/Nuclear Medicine (B.S.) program), and MRI (post training) equipment and supplies.
  • Thorough knowledge of radiation protection standards, devices and techniques to assure that adequate safeguards are maintained.
WORKING CONDITIONS
ENVIRONMENT
  • Required travel: To and from Mercy Hospital and satellites (MACC and MDTC).
  • Normal to cool temperature, dimmer lights.
  • Risk of exposure to infectious organisms, ionizing radiation and strong magnetic field.
  • Special precautions are observed in the MRI area, which is monitored by the technologist to prevent entry into the magnetic room of unsuspected ferrous object which could cause severe projectile injury to people within the room.
