About the role…
As a Sr. II Engineer, you will play a key role in modernizing both HashiCorp’s Vagrant Cloud and Vagrant. Initially, your time will be dedicated to the migration of Vagrant Cloud to a HashiCorp managed platform. You will be migrating from a Ruby codebase to Go. This project will also require you to manage collaborations between Vagrant core engineering and HashiCorp internal services so that the result is a seamless user experience at the completion of the migration. Once the migration is complete, you will join the core team to work on the Vagrant 3.0 project.
HashiCorp Vagrant started as a small project to make interacting with virtual machines for local development easy. A core community of developers, operators, designers, and products continue to rely on Vagrant for their specialized workflows.
In our pursuit to continue improving Vagrant, we discovered a path that would allow Vagrant to be ported to Go and still support its Ruby-based features. We are migrating the Vagrant core codebase to Go to allow the team to more easily introduce new features, capabilities, and improvements.
Additionally, you will help with the maintenance of Vagrant and Vagrant Cloud, in tight collaboration with the large Vagrant community, utilizing your software engineering skills to work across a diverse set of infrastructure providers.
In this role you can expect to…
- Do most day-to-day coding in Go and Ruby
- Support and modernize Vagrant Cloud, the mature Vagrant box-sharing SaaS from Rails to Go
- Support new and existing Vagrant drivers and providers
- Advocate and support improvements to Vagrant internals and exposed APIs
- Opportunity to support open source contributors, new and seasoned, with supportive and constructive code review, documentation improvements, and workflow changes
- Work on Vagrant issues and improvements critical to the success of HashiCorp users and the broader community
You may be a good fit for our team if you have…
- Comfortable working with a small team in a highly collaborative environment
- Experience modernizing applications
- Experience with operating systems other than Linux and OS X
- Familiarity with Terraform and the HashiCorp product stack
- Interest in virtual machine/container concepts and ecosystem
- Experience with user support or OSS community support (to help interface with the Vagrant community)
- Familiarity with cloud platforms
