Description

Overall Responsibilities :

• Serve as a public relations representative regarding newspaper content.
• Assist with sports pages layout
• Cover sports and takes photos as assigned.
• Write fair, accurate, complete and timely stories, and take or obtain photos and graphics as needed, along with supporting data and information, to meet newspaper deadlines
• Coordinate content with editor

Specific Responsibilities

• File complete sports packages, including photos, captions and headlines, to engage readers, in accordance with editor’s deadlines (Mondays, unless otherwise assigned).
• Communicate with editor each Tuesday to report what events will be covered for the next edition.
• Monitor ongoing news and issues on sports’ beats, coordinating complete coverage, developing sources and producing story ideas (preferably recommending 2-3 sports feature ideas each sports season).
• Develop sports sources and contacts.
• Maintain a proactive "customer-comes-first" commitment to internal and external customer service.
• Assist with proofreading on Tuesdays.
• Adhere to and help develop WCI policies and journalistic ethics.
• Update weekly This Week In Sports standings, when applicable.

Skills : High degree of sports knowledge, and what matters to our readers. Understanding of good design and writing principles in English; reporting, interviewing, writing, typing, planning and organizing . Computer and Internet proficiency and ability to adapt to new technology; time management; photography; ability to perform efficiently and accurately on deadline. Valid driver’s license.

Knowledge : Associate’s degree; preferred two years of newspaper or related media/communications experience; familiarity with overall newspaper operations, current events and history; understanding of the community you cover.
