General Summary:
Ensure the smooth and accurate flow of specimens from collection through receipt in the processing or testing department and understands the urgency and importance of all patient samples. Assist with tracking, transport and problem resolution of all specimens.
Principal Duties

• Maintains sample integrity according to established procedures
• Assists with workflow as directed by the staff.
• Delivers and documents all available specimens and ensures all pertinent information is included in the process.
• Demonstrates knowledge of relevant hospital specimen collection processes and locations and transport procedures.
• Transports specimens within Perioperative Services to the appropriate department.
• Answers the phone as needed. Provides information and refers callers appropriately when indicated.
• Is responsible to be aware of TJC National Patient Safety Goals and to comply with BWH policies and procedures.
• Informs Supervisor when specimen supplies are low.
• Places and delivers specimen samples to the appropriate department.
• Maintains Safety: Follows BWH infection control guidelines and safety protocols when transporting specimens.
• Responsible for chain of custody for specimens in perioperative areas.
• Makes sure that all samples are accounted for processing or transport according to established procedures.
• Tracks and Reconciles specimens via transport tracking or other systems, including Epic, Scanning and Sunquest
• Makes certain that the number and types of specimens is correct according to established procedures.
• Maintains sample integrity according to established procedures.
• Receives and responds to assignments from supervisor following established protocols.
• Assists with emergency procedures during computer down time, following established protocols under the direction of the Supervisor.
• Confirms orders, labels, and requisitions in accordance with department policies.
• Maintains neatness and organization of work and storage area including collection carts and transport bins
• Performs other duties as required.
• Communicates and escalates missing or unacceptable specimen information to the supervisor immediately upon discovery.
• Receives specimens from patient care areas and transports to the appropriate department.

Qualifications

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
• Previous laboratory experience, medical assistant, phlebotomy, or anesthesia technician experience preferred

Skills/Abilities/Competencies Required

• Must be able to communicate effectively with co-workers and clinical personnel.
• Must be able to navigate in Epic, Sunquest or other lab applications.
• Must be able to successfully complete annual competency testing.
• Must be organized and capable of working under pressure and be flexible to adjust schedule in accordance with the needs of the department.
