Job Description

- UH: Cardiodiagnostic Lab - (Unscheduled, Day Shift) -

The Sonographer Assistant-Unlicensed works under the supervision of a credentialed staff Sonographer or Radiologist. Prepares the patients, equipment, and supplies prior to exams. Performs the requested ultrasound or vascular examinations as prescribed on protocol. Supports the major objectives of the Department of Ultrasound and Vascular such as excellence in clinical services, in educational activities, in research and development activities, in employee environmental conditions, and in reduction of medical cost. These services may be provided for both the LLUMC and LLUC H hospitals. Performs other duties as needed.

Currently enrolled as a second year student at Loma Linda University School of Allied Health in the Diagnostic Medical Sonography program. Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.

Manipulate transducers and ultrasound instrumentation; computer skills to manage patient data, i.e. QA, ability to communicate effectively about complex matter with others who have varying levels of comprehension. Explain procedures to patients, instruct students and residents to perform sonograms, and work in teams to accomplish specific patient care goals. Excellent interpersonal skills in dealing with patients, physicians and co-workers. Analyze and interpret patient clinical data and ultrasound findings, follow simple/moderate/complex instructions, recognize and appropriately report safety problems or other problem situations, and measure parameters on patient sonogram, i.e. flow velocities. Demonstrates the ability to recognize priorities and deal with them appropriately. Able to read; write legibly; speak in English with professional quality; use computer and software programs necessary to the position; troubleshoot and calibrate patient care equipment. Must have excellent interpersonal skills in dealing with patients of all ages, physicians and co-workers. Possess the ability to communicate effectively about complex matters. Able to relate and communicate positively, effectively, and professionally with others; be assertive and consistent in following and/or enforcing policies; work calmly and respond courteously when under pressure; lead, supervise, teach, and collaborate; accept direction. Possess good decision making skills. Able to communicate effectively in English in person, in writing, and on the telephone; think critically; perform basic math functions; manage multiple assignments effectively; work well under pressure; problem solve; organize and prioritize workload; recall information with accuracy; pay close attention to detail. Able to distinguish colors and smells as necessary for patient care; hear sufficiently for general conversation in person and on the telephone; identify and distinguish various sounds associated with the work place/patient care; see adequately to read computer screens, medical records, and written documents necessary to position; discern temperature variances through touch.
