Software Engineer Jobs

The Software Engineer will work on developing the Getz lab’s computational infrastructure for analyzing tens of thousands of cancer whole genomes, at all analytical stages from from raw data processing to interactive exploratory analyses. The computational demands for processing genomics data are enormous; a single whole genome can amount to several hundred gigabytes in raw sequencing data, and consume several thousand CPU hours to process. Furthermore, as the field of genomics continuously evolves, so do its workflows and methods. Our compute infrastructure therefore must not only be extremely performant, but also easy to modify and expand, facilitating easy pipeline development and iteration as methods evolve. Thus, our pipelines must be implemented in a framework that is as amenable to interactive coding and debugging as it is to running at scale. It should be as easy to run the same workflow at scale on tens of thousands of samples on a 100,000 core cloud-based HPC cluster, or on a single sample on a laptop, interactively stepping through each task in a Jupyter notebook.

Required Skills

• Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively across disciplines to facilitate productive collaborations with research scientists and industry partners
• No medical, genomics, or scientific background is required, just an enthusiasm to improve the world of medicine and an ability to write exceptional software.
• Experience with Python or similar programming language
• Experience with relational databases, PostgreSQL preferred
• Comfortable with GitHub, shell scripting, and CI/CD workflows
• Familiarity with available tooling integrations between GitHub and Slack
• Experience writing unit tests and integration tests
• Experience with Google Cloud Platform (or another cloud platform like AWS or Azure)
• Experience working in a production environment

Qualifications

• BS or MS in computer science, engineering, or a related field
• 2+ years of experience in a technical role
