Job Description
POSITION PURPOSE


The OrangeWorks internship is a part time opportunity for students interested in furthering their skills in software development. This internship will allow students to learn the fundamentals of full stack development while conducting research and building a prototype to help solve a given business problem.


The OrangeWorks internship is not your typical intern program, we take business challenges from across the Home Depot and ask you to create the solution by exploring how newer or emerging technologies can help move our business forward. You will not only be coding your prototype but you will also learn about design thinking and be able to practice your presentation skills through sharing your work with your stakeholders.


Students Interested In The OrangeWorks Program Must Consider The Following Details To Determine If This Program Is The Right Fit For You


  • Most of the work can be done virtually
  • We are looking for students who are interested in a future career in software engineering
  • Spring semester dates: January 23rd, 2023- May 5th, 2023
  • Hours: Must be able to commit to 15 hours per week, those hours are to be logged Monday-Friday between 9am-5pm est


Major Tasks, Responsibilities And Key Accountabilities


10% - Planning & Analysis:


  • Uses critical thinking to approach problems and create solutions
  • Collaborates with senior leaders on assignments
70% - Delivery & Support:


  • Collaborates and pairs with other product team members (UX, engineering, and product management) to create secure, reliable, scalable software solutions
  • Configures commercial off the shelf solutions to align with evolving business needs
  • Works under the direction of a more senior engineer to build a well-rounded skillset
  • Creates automation scripts for both infrastructure and test cases
20% - Learning:


  • Proactively views articles, tutorials, and videos to learn about new technologies and best practices being used within other technology organizations
  • Reviews and discusses code from more senior engineers to understand best practices and design patterns
  • Participates in learning activities around modern software design and development core practices (communities of practice)
  • Increases business acumen by learning about other parts of the business
NATURE AND SCOPETypically reports to the Technology Coordination Manager or Sr. Manager.


Environment


ENVIRONMENTAL JOB REQUIREMENTS
Located in a comfortable indoor area. Any unpleasant conditions would be infrequent and not objectionable.
Travel
Typically requires overnight travel less than 10% of the time.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Must be eighteen years of age or older.
  • Must be legally permitted to work in the United States.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Exposure to CI/CD tools
  • Exposure to an object-oriented programming language (preferably Java)
  • Exposure to source code version control
  • Exposure to microservice-based architecture
  • Exposure to cloud computing techniques
  • 0-1 years of relevant work experience
  • Exposure to Relational or noSQL database technology
  • Exposure to front end technology such as HTML, CSS, and Javascript/Typescript frameworks
