What you need to know about the job:
The American Red Cross seeks a creative and energetic Site Reliability Engineer to join our Fundraising & Marketing Technology Group (FMTG) in supporting applications that help to deliver ARC’s mission to “prevent and alleviate human suffering in the face of emergencies by mobilizing the power of volunteers and the generosity of donors.” We accomplish this primarily through public-facing applications at Redcross.org and Redcrossblood.org, an internal gift management platform. The Site Reliability Engineer will be responsible for managing and triaging operational tickets pertaining to the data platform services as well as author and maintain operational run books to help reduce mean Time of Incidents (TOI). You will also assist in designing and maintaining hosting, process, transform, and analyze operational processes. You will work in concert with developers to evolve systems/products for better scalability, reliability and enable developer velocity. Emphasis on driving prioritization and execution of work based on business impact is a must.

Under supervision of the Senior Director, IT Platform Operations, the Site Reliability Engineer will:
  • Ensure customer focus and satisfaction amongst business users, product/product development, security, and infrastructure areas. Acting as a customer advocate, frequently communicating, and engaging the “voice of the customer” and managing customer expectations as well as providing meaningful, actionable analysis of operations data
  • Provide on-call support when necessary.
  • Provide leadership, decision-making support and direction in a matrix environment to ensure reliable operation of FMTG platforms.
  • Act as an escalation point for complex or critical issues that have not yet been documented as Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Work with other engineers on the shared full stack ownership of a collection of services and/or technology areas. Understand the end-to-end configuration, technical dependencies, and overall behavioral characteristics of production services.
  • Research and recommend innovative IT solutions to improve efficiency and reduce operational costs.
  • Serve as part of a 24x7 On Call rotation
  • Lead issue resolution and Incident Management activities as delegated by team leadership.
  • Establish key performance indicators and service level agreements for continually improving the performance of IT operations and lead collaboration with other IT groups to coordinate continual ITSM excellence.
  • Liaise with offshore team and clients for resolving technical dependencies, issues, and risks.
The work location for this exciting opportunity is virtual. The selected candidate will work 100% remotely from home and can be located anywhere in the United States with a preference to work East Coast hours (starting daily by 8am EST).

PAY INFORMATION: The starting annual salary for this position will range from $115K - $125K. We do not offer an annual bonus for this role. Note that American Red Cross salaries are aligned to the specific geographic location in which the work is primarily performed. Other factors that may be used to determine your actual salary may include your specific skills, how many years of experience you have and comparison to other employees already in this role. **We will review specific salary information at the time of phone screening based upon your location & experience.**

WHAT YOU NEED TO SUCCEED (required/minimum qualifications):
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, or another related field or its equivalent.*
  • 5+ years of work experience in a Production environment operating ecommerce and/or content management platforms.
  • Have exceptional interpersonal, communication and organizational skills, and be able to collaborate effectively within a diverse corporate and client environment.
  • On-the job hands-on Production technical experience with the following aspects of our platforms required including:
o Amazon Web Services (AWS) administration – EC2, ALB, ECS with Docker, VPC, RDS, S3, Cloudwatch
o Configuring DNS, SSL/TLS, Akamai or other advanced CDN configuration
o N-tier web infrastructure experience (troubleshoot HTTP errors and performance, web server config, DB and middleware connectivity)
o Java EE/J2EE performance tuning and troubleshooting experience
o Linux sysadmin, TCP/IP troubleshooting experience
o Ecommerce experience (troubleshooting order/payment/API issues, order research and reporting using SQL queries)
o CI/CD tools such as Jenkins, Nexus, Git/Bitbucket
  • Possess the ability to adapt fluidly and manage tense situations.
  • Self-starter, self-driven, problem solver with strong ownership and commitment.
  • Ability to analyze data, set priorities, and shape results in a corporate environment.
WHAT WILL GIVE YOU A COMPETITIVE EDGE (preferred qualifications):
  • 3+ years of work experience with instrumentation tools such as New Relic or similar.
  • 3+ years of work experience supporting Custom Java/Spring micro-services
  • 1+ years of work experience administering Apache Lucene / Nutch / Solr
  • 1+ years of work experience using Microsoft Azure
  • 3+ years of work experience working with SQL and administering RDBMS such as MySQL or PostgreSQL on AWS Aurora/RDS
  • 1+ years of work experience supporting Adobe Experience Cloud products including:
o Adobe Experience Manager
o Adobe Analytics
o Adobe Target
o Adobe Campaign
  • AWS Certified SysOps Administrator / DevOps Engineer / Solutions Architect certification
  • Combination of candidate’s education and general experience satisfies requirements so long as the total years equate to description’s minimum education and general experience years combined (Management experience cannot be substituted).
