Overview:
The Senior Youth Development Counselor’s role forms part of the Residential Life leadership assuring the provision of 24 hours supervision, structure and guidance to the participants. The Senior Youth Development Counselor works collaboratively with the wider inter-disciplinary team to create a therapeutic milieu, in which each participant is able to reach their fullest potential and learn socially appropriate behavior, daily skills and develop their individual talents, while attending to their socio-emotional well-being. The Senior Youth Development Counselor is expected to uphold Good Shepherd Services Mission and demonstrate that “We See What Can Be” in the approach to participants.

Hours:
40 Hours/Week; Non- Exempt

Major Duties:
  • Prepare and actively participate in Treatment Team Meetings.
  • Provide medication administration assistance to participants as trained; and monitor participant’s medical well-being for feedback to and support from Health Services.
  • Actively participate in supervision and attend all meetings and trainings including but not limited to program meetings, community meetings and treatment team meetings.
  • Lead and coordinate tasks on designated shift, while maintaining progress updates for effective shift transitions and reporting to the wider residential leadership.
  • Promote and model the seven Sanctuary Model commitments to create a non-violent and trauma-sensitive culture.
  • Plan, lead, and engage participants in a range of program activities including recreational activities, family activities, tutoring, cultural events and special activities.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Effectively use and practice of the Sanctuary Model tools of safety plans, community meetings, psycho-educational groups, team meetings, red flag reviews, treatment planning conferences (or similar), and self- care in the department/program to create a non-violent and trauma-sensitive culture.
  • Prompt and escort participants to and from appointments as assigned.
  • Effectively use and model the Missouri approach.
  • In conjunction with emotional management, promote improved behavioral functioning of participants through the program’s behavioral intervention programs.
  • Assure the safety of participants through effective on-site supervision as well as monitoring of whereabouts while they are offsite as reasonably able.
  • Monitor and support participant’s education through school escorting, attendance check, homework assistance and other school support activities.
  • Execute all Youth Development Counselor responsibilities as outlined below.
  • Address the daily care of participants including but not limited to food, personal hygiene, household care, laundering and medical support while partnering with participants to teach and strengthen their daily living skills for greater self-sufficiency.
  • Collaborate closely with the Program Director, Assistant Director of Residential Life, Residential Life Supervisor and other Residential leadership to effectively implement Residential Life services.
  • Support the strengthening of the socio-emotional well-being of participants through co-regulation techniques, supportive counseling, conflict mediation and other emotional development techniques in a trauma responsive manner. This is as guided by the agency and program approaches such as Youth and Family Development, Sanctuary, Missouri and Safe Crisis Management.
  • Engage and involve families of participants, in collaboration with the inter-disciplinary team, including through regular notifications; supporting family time activities; and responsiveness to family queries.
  • Undertake developmental assignments based on program needs and growth interests such as supervision of team members; facilitation of groups and meetings with staff and/or participants, etc.
  • Maintain documentation through logs, incidents reports, etc.
  • Serve as peer coach and mentor to new hires.
  • Engage in continuous active efforts to have a positive relationship with all participants, including proactively repairing and restoring relationships when indicated.
  • Integrate the Sanctuary Model SELF (Safety, Emotional Management, Loss and Future) framework into daily practice to ensure quality care and an effective work environment.
Qualifications:
  • Completed all required trainings in Agency culture (LGBTQ, MEO, YFD); foundations of TIP; and all Sanctuary, SCM trainings, Missouri Approach, and other mandated trainings
  • Consistently adheres to schedule, attendance policy (sick / paid time off); and other programmatic expectations
  • Considered and looked upon as a GSS culture carrier by peers and supervisors
  • Continue to meet all the qualifications for Youth Development Counselor.
  • Minimum of two and a half (2.5) years as a full time Youth Development Counselor (or full time equivalent) with Good Shepherd Services
  • Consistently completes and has proven competency with administrative tasks associated with the position (incident reports, justice center, logs, med admin, etc.)
  • Rated as “Satisfactory” or “Successful” performer in key competencies on annual performance evaluation (especially with “accountability”, “judgement & decision making”, “building relationships”, “Sanctuary and YFD”)
  • Employee in good standing, ie., has not been on a PIP within the past year
Additional Qualifications:
  • Ability to perform physical restraint of youth using approved restraint procedures.
  • Must be able to successfully complete state mandated crisis intervention training within two months of hire
  • Must successfully complete a pre-hire physical ability test.
  • Must be capable of sustained physical exertion and have no limitations on ability to engage in necessary physical intervention activities including but not limited to: standing, twisting, turning, kneeling, and supporting a participant’s body weight.
