The Publishing division of the American College of Physicians (ACP) is looking to hire a Senior Writer for the ACP Internist/ACP Hospitalist department. ACP, a national organization of internal medicine physicians and related subspecialists, is the largest medical specialty organization and the second-largest physician group in the United States with 161,000 members worldwide.
The Senior Writer is responsible for writing monthly news and feature articles, as well as weekly and monthly e-newsletter items. The role involves closely monitoring news trends relevant to our readers and collaborating with the news publishing team to identify compelling topics for articles. The Senior Writer will handle project management of department products as needed and engage in editorial research and editing tasks. This is a hybrid position based in Philadelphia.
Primary responsibilities will include:
- Staying up-to-date with important developments in medicine and healthcare, maintaining an article file, and participating in article planning meetings.
- Serving as the primary writer for newspaper/magazine departments and writing items for all department e-newsletters.
- Taking a lead role in identifying suitable topics and sources for own articles and those of other writers in collaboration with other news publishing staff.
- Writing assignment letters for freelancers and editing freelance- and staff-written stories and news items as required.
- Managing projects for specialty e-newsletters and other initiatives.
- Attending medical and healthcare business conferences to provide coverage and generate story ideas.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Crafting detailed, well-structured, and often multisource feature and news articles covering complex and controversial topics related to clinical medicine, the business of medicine, and advocacy issues.
Position Requirements:
- Experience with social media platforms, websites, blogs, and basic HTML/XML knowledge are helpful but not required.
- Superior interviewing skills and the ability to interview sources with high levels of expertise in medicine, social sciences, and government.
- Ability to write quickly and accurately.
- Minimum of five years' experience writing and editing journalistically sound, feature-length articles for a national audience of physicians or equivalent writing and editing experience.
- Demonstrated knowledge of the U.S. healthcare system, including fundamental organizational, economic, and regulatory aspects of healthcare delivery.
- Excellent newsgathering skills, including knowledge of information resources and the Freedom of Information Act.
- Bachelor's degree, preferably in journalism or English, or equivalent job-related experience.
- Proficiency in various writing styles, including feature writing, business writing, conference coverage, medical writing, news and news brief writing, and writing for online audiences.
- Computer knowledge and Internet research skills are necessary.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills essential for writing (including news, medical, and feature writing), editing, interviewing, and research tasks.
- Responsible for prioritizing own tasks and managing time effectively to meet editorial deadlines and production schedules.
