Job Description

Responsibilities include technology development and problem solving related to materials performance for industrial surface finishing applications. More specifically, the development of wear resistant (hard, low friction) performance coatings. This position will offer the opportunity to work on multiple projects while collaborating with industry experts to advance understanding and capabilities in surface finishing.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS and RESPONSIBIITIES:

  • Hands-on operation of coating systems, along with upstream processes such as parts cleaning and surface preparation along with analytical and performance testing of coatings.
  • Establishing quality documentation for new processes including PFMEA/Control Plans, Work Instructions, training plans and performance specifications.
  • Direct interactions with customers for identifying and defining problems, technical requirements and establishing timelines to drive solutions into production.
  • Lead and actively participate in projects involving the creation, scaling up and troubleshooting of processes for wear resistant coatings.
  • Proactively searching for new surface finishing technologies and provide analysis to determine suitability for implementation.

SKILLS and ABILITIES:

  • Strong understanding an experience with PVD/PE-CVD vacuum technology is required.
  • Good written and verbal communication ability for technical reports and presentations
  • Experience with other surface treatments and finishing processes such as parts cleaning, electroplating and organic coatings and the evaluation of surface performance is a plus.
  • Proficiency with statistical software such as Minitab is a plus.
  • Some travel will be required (~10%)
  • Strong knowledge of coatings for applications such as: cutting tools, plastic processing, metal forming and mechanical components.
  • Ability to develop and execute experimental plans, including basic Design of Experiment (DOE) methods.
  • Project management experience is a plus.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical, Chemical, Materials or Metallurgical Engineering or related field;
  • 10+ years of relevant work experience preferably in an industrial environment in R&D and/or process development department.
  • Must be authorized to work in the US.
  • Ability to manage projects and complete tasks with minimal supervision.
