Join the maintenance and reliability group at our Commerce City refinery, which is the largest refinery in the Rocky Mountain region and the only petroleum refinery in Colorado. We have a great opportunity for a Senior Materials Engineer, also known as a Metallurgist or Corrosion Engineer.
As part of a busy team of experienced professionals, you will provide the technical support necessary to ensure reliable and efficient operations. You will lead the charge for meeting reliability targets and asset improvement through the application of Operational Discipline, Process Safety Management (PSM), and Suncor's Operational Excellence Management System (OEMS) programs while upholding engineering and industry best practices, adhering to Suncor’s technical standards, and applicable codes.

Minimum Requirements:
  • Experience with Root Cause Analysis investigations
  • Knowledge of design, repair, testing, and commissioning of fixed mechanical equipment including piping, vessels, heat exchangers, fin fans, etc.
  • Dedication to employee health and safety and the environment
  • Bachelor's degree in metallurgy, chemical engineering, or materials engineering
  • Previous experience with Fitness for Service Calculations, material selection, damage mechanism identification, welding, and coating selection
  • Ability to apply the foundational elements of reliability and understands how they interact
  • Knowledge of materials and corrosion related API/NACE standards, such as API 571, 581 etc, NACE 0103, 0175, 0170 etc
  • Previous experience with SAP (for reporting, history and recommendation), or GE's Asset Performance Management (APM) software would be considered an asset
  • 7-10 years of relevant professional experiencein heavy industrial settings, preferably in the refining or petrochemicals sector
  • A valid driver’s license and a clean driving record
  • Ability to work with and influence stakeholders on technical decisions

Responsibilities:
  • Act as Corrosion Control Documentation (CCD) and Risk Based Inspection (RBI) Program Manager
  • Analyze reports on corrosion tracking and provide support for emerging corrsion threats
  • Ensure compliance with inspection and mechanical integrity programs for static equipment, in accordance with legal requirements and corporate standards
  • Ensure integrity of static equipment is maintained and improved through Reliability Group and Maintenance programs and procedures
  • Monitor effectiveness of programs and procedures and recommend changes
  • Monitor and measure asset performance and ensure asset performance and strategy effectiveness measurements are fully integrated into asset strategies and maintenance programs
  • Support the operations and maintenance departments
  • Compile a list of repetitive failures and remedy their causes through the application of failure analysis techniques
  • Organize and manage data compilation (thicknesses, equipment history, future recommendations)
  • Perform quality control and/or quality assurance tasks for repair work and new installations
  • Apply appropriate equipment operating condition detection techniques (vibration analysis, multivariate trending, infrared, ultrasonic, etc.)
  • Act as technical expert for field maintenance personnel during repair work and provide mentorship to Inspectors and other Mechanical Engineers
  • Manage the Material Testing Reports (MTRs), material traceability, Positive Material Identification program (PMI), and acceptance prior to fabrication
  • Analyze equipment performance reports to identify and implement opportunities for improvement

Location and other Key Details:
  • Relocation support will be provided
  • You will work out of our Commerce City refinery, located at 5801 Brighton Blvd.

  • Hours of work are a regular 40-hour work week, Monday to Friday, with the potential for extended work hours based on business needs
