Job Description

Lawrence Berkeley National Lab’s (LBNL) Facilities Division has an opening for a Senior Laborer to join the team.


In this role, you will be responsible for performing tasks involving physical labor throughout the Lab site, including buildings, construction projects, excavations, and demolition sites. This position performs a variety of construction and maintenance work requiring training and extensive experience, such as operating heavy vehicular equipment for excavation, grading, and material movement.


What You Will Do:

  • Operate air compressors and pneumatic hammers for chipping concrete and rock for demolitions and excavations.
  • Independently select materials, equipment, and work methods per established shop guidelines, policies, and procedures.
  • Learn about and consistently apply current Work Control Processes (WPC) to ensure that risks are acceptable for all unique activities involving potentially hazardous conditions.
  • Documentation of work procedures using the job task analysis
  • Excavate trenches and holes with shovels and hand tools as required to locate existing underground utility lines.
  • Comply with Department of Energy health and safety policies and other applicable federal, state, and local fire, health, safety, emergency preparedness, pollution prevention, and environmental protection policies.
  • Participate in the maintenance and operations of a labor shop; clean, maintain, and service tools, equipment, and vehicles used in the performance of duties.
  • Install, repair, and modify chain link fences and gates.
  • Computer training: to include various safety, forklift operation certification, lock out tag out, fall protection/plans, confined space, MSDS, asbestos and lead/silica identification, ladder safety, emergency evacuation, in-house OSHA and respirator training, and any other LBL/UC required training.
  • Prepare and lay asphalt, and concrete for walkways, driveways, roadways, and curbs. Operate asphalt roller.
  • Operate construction excavation equipment such as D-4 cats, dump trucks, front-end loaders, backhoes, and bobcats with attachments.
  • Place and finish concrete for retaining walls, slabs, walkways, floor drains, and curbs for general construction projects and remodels, and for intricate and complex structures in support of research projects.
  • Use protective clothing and equipment, safety policies, and other applicable Federal, State, and local fire, health, safety, emergency-preparedness, pollution-prevention, and environmental protection policies.
  • Reports progress or delays and refers major problems to the supervisor for resolution.

Additional Responsibilities as needed:

  • Operate concrete core drill and concrete saw for coring and cutting slabs and walls.

What is Required:

  • Basic understanding of common Laborer terminology.
  • Working knowledge of OSHA requirements and job safety practices.
  • Ability to clearly communicate both in writing and verbally with supervisor regarding work assignments/safety issues.
  • Extensive knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in the laborer field; applicable state and federal health and safety code requirements.
  • Demonstrated ability to read, write and comprehend written and verbal instructions.
  • Experienced in maintaining the exterior of a large and complex hillside facility’s roads, walkways, storm drains, slide repairs.
  • Ability to distinguish colors.
  • Have manual dexterity in both hands.
  • Must be able to work assignments that may include overtime on weekdays, weekends and holidays.
  • Must possess a valid (Class C) California driver's license.
  • Ability to lift 60 lbs. to chest height.
  • Demonstrated acquired qualifications in a formal apprenticeship training program OR equivalent field training OR 4 years or more work experience in the operation of general construction earth moving equipment.
  • Ability to climb stairs, ladders, scaffolds and work at various heights.
  • Must be able to read and comply with posted warnings.
  • Demonstrated ability to use computers effectively for record keeping, communication and on-line training.
  • Work in confined spaces, around rotating equipment, or under fluorescent lights.
  • Ability to bend, stoop, kneel, crawl.
  • Use protective clothing, safety equipment and respirators.
  • Experience in the appropriate job site organizations: Storage of materials, minimizing disruptions to others’ work, safe and efficient care-taking of tools and equipment.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experienced in hillside stabilization techniques.
  • Familiar with code standards.
  • Knowledge of LBL facilities layout, key personnel, procedures governing stores issues, safety program and facilities design requirements. All will be required after employment.

Notes:

  • The full hourly range for this position is $25.84 - $38.38/hourly for the job classification of 789.3. The hourly rate for this position is based on a step schedule and the final candidate’s qualifications, relevant experience (if applicable, and union contract agreement).
  • This is a full-time career appointment, non-exempt (hourly paid) eligible for overtime pay.
  • Salary will be predetermined based on collective bargaining agreements step rates.
  • This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes.
  • Work will be primarily performed at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA, and will include driving to remote LBNL locations.
