Senior Financial Analyst, Financial Planning and Analysis


The San Francisco Chronicle is looking for a Senior Financial Analyst to partner with our San Francisco Chronicle & SFGATE Newsrooms, and various other departments (i.e., Advertising, Marketing, Circulation, and Production) within Hearst Newspapers. As a senior analyst, your work, whether it's modeling business scenarios or tracking performance metrics, is used by our leaders to make strategic decisions. A master juggler working on multiple projects at a time, you are focused on the details while finding creative ways to tackle big picture challenges. You are flexible in a constantly changing dynamic environment.


We are looking for someone with the analytical rigor and strategic thinking to drive our business forward. This is an exciting role that provides full finance support to business partners as well as offering scope for leadership of individual analytical projects. You will work in close partnership with highly talented finance colleagues from across the region and consult on planning, reporting and decision support for the wide range of activities. Responsibilities


  • Develop detailed and dynamic assumption-based financial models and P&Ls that support fact-based decision making. Be proactive and flexible and be able to iterate quickly to address challenges.
  • Manage and track capital projects.
  • Strategically partner with Advertising to drive contribution margin. Collaborate with Ad leaders by providing clear, actionable reports that monitor key performance metrics and influence decision-making.
  • Identify risks and opportunities and use data for support decision making.
  • Lead efforts to build new tools that automate and streamline processes and increase efficiencies.
  • Work on ad hoc projects, financial processes, and reporting as needed.
  • Oversee reporting including monthly forecast, annual budget and strategic plans for departments (e.g., Operations, Circulation, Advertising).
  • Forecast revenue and expenses on a weekly, monthly, and quarterly basis. Analyze drivers, communicate insights and provide strategic direction.
  • Manage operating expenses and monthly accruals for various departments and explain variances.
  • Develop strong, trustworthy relationships cross-functionally within unit and across Hearst Newspapers.


Qualifications


  • Proficient with Excel and PowerPoint; comfort and interest in learning new software; experience with Oracle is highly desirable
  • Excellent quantitative, written, and presentation skills; innovative, organized, thorough and flexible. Eagerness to further develop these skills.
  • 3-5 years of relevant work experience.
  • Impeccable business judgment, with the ability to motivate colleagues and collaborate effectively to help influence senior leadership.
  • BA / BS degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics, or equivalent field.
  • Strong ability to turn data into actionable insights.


In accordance with applicable law, Hearst is required to include a reasonable estimate of the compensation for this role if hired in California. The reasonable estimate is between $95,000 and $105,000. Please note this information is specific to those hired in San Francisco. If this role is open to candidates outside of San Francisco, the salary range would be aligned to that specific location. A final decision on the successful candidate’s starting salary will be based on a number of permissible, non-discriminatory factors, including but not limited to skills and experience, training, certifications, and education.
