Job Description
What The Role Is
Reporting to the SVP, Asset and Energy Management, the Senior Analyst, Energy Management align company's energy portfolio, consisting of over 7,000 MWs of renewable and conventional generation, with management's portfolio strategy and risk tolerance. Works with management on developing, reviewing, and modifying the portfolio strategy to provide guidance on future expectations. Works closely with energy traders to incorporate short-term market conditions into risk management strategy. This position does not currently supervise any direct reports but anticipates growth potential in the future as the company continues its current aggressive growth trajectory. Job location is Carlsbad, CA or Scottsdale, AZ. This job posting is open to multiple locations but represents one available position
What You'll Be Doing
Risk Analytics
  • Develop portfolio risk limits and maintain portfolio-level risk metrics accounting for cross-market correlations in energy, congestion, and REC prices.
  • Develop short term models for gross energy margin at risk for projects with market price exposure, with a focus on prompt month to five years forward, to guide hedging and risk mitigation strategies within the confines of the established Energy Risk Management policies.
  • Support energy management team with trading tools to support of day ahead energy offers and CRR/FTR bidding strategies. Facilitate trading strategy performance benchmarking and establishing risk limits.
  • Review forward market price volatility curves and correlation assumptions for stochastic risk modeling.
Energy Market Strategy
  • Support valuation of short-term hedge and PPA amendments for contract negotiations with the Origination team
  • Develop REC, Capacity, Resource Adequacy, and transmission hedging trading strategies.
  • Collaborate with Managing Director, Market Fundamentals to incorporate long-term fundamental views into short-term risk mitigation trading strategies.
  • Develop gas trading strategies to help mitigate the risk for the company's three conventional assets.
  • Develop and apply portfolio optimization techniques to drive hedge strategy decisions while balancing risk-adjusted revenue of Clearway's renewable assets. Hedging strategies include day-ahead transactions, CRR/FTRs, and term hedge and PPA transactions. Perform daily and weekly portfolio assessments to identify opportunities to maximize portfolio profit opportunities and identify risks.
Reporting & Communication
  • Present risk issues that require approval of the Energy Risk Committee at the committee meeting. Work closely with the Director of Risk to ensure compliance and adherence to the risk policies.
  • Lead creation of management reporting that present positions and exposures including mark to market credit exposures of energy positions and value at risk.
  • Collaborate with senior executives in setting appropriate hedging and risk management strategies for both renewable and conventional assets.
  • Maintain confidentiality and sensitivity with respect to all functions of DEI.
  • Participate in Energy Risk Committee discussions along with senior leadership.
What You'll Bring
  • Experience in valuing and transacting transmission hedging products
  • Solid understanding of various power markets including forwards, futures, swaps, and options.
  • Experience working with variable generators and natural gas plants is highly desirable
  • Strong business and financial savvy with the ability to support a high-performance organization that will deliver operational excellence and meet or exceed financial targets
  • Highly proficient in developing sophisticated models to analyze and identify energy market risks
  • Strong relationships with credit and professionals, both internally and externally, to ensure adherence with established credit and risk policies

  • Ability to think creatively, manage competing priorities, work independently, and pay attention to detail
  • Experience working with Energy Trading Risk Management (ETRM) systems
  • Strong Python or other coding programing skills
  • Ability to extract, manipulate and analyze large datasets relevant to energy market in order to develop complex trading algorithms
  • Bachelor's degree in Finance, Business, Economics or a related quantitative field required.
  • Ability to perform well under pressure on teams in a demanding environment and occasionally work extended hours to meet project deadlines
  • 3+ years of energy industry experience in a portfolio optimization, energy risk mitigation, energy hedging and trading, contract administration, project finance, and other commercial engagements
  • Experience with ISDAs, credit support annexes, and other enabling agreements that govern energy commodities, products, and instruments
  • Highly proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Collaboration with Asset Management, Capital Markets and Portfolio Finance to ensure enabling agreements are executed and followed within risk management framework
  • Experience in valuing and transacting Resource Adequacy and Capacity products
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and an ability to communicate complex issues in a clear, concise manner
  • Self-motivated, highly organized, and detail oriented

  • MBA or MS is highly desirable

What We Provide
The salary range for this position is $128,000 to $153,000 and is eligible to earn an annual cash bonus, subject to personal and company performance goals. The pay rate for the successful candidate will depend on geographic location, skills, relevant and demonstrated experience, education, training and certifications, and other factors permitted by law.
