Job Description
Job Title: Security Officer Department: Security Reports To: Director of Safety and Security FLSA Status: Non-Exempt Job Code: A-4 Summary: Provides for the safety and security of the Maryville College Campus. This position is a Campus Security Authority (CSA) as defined by the Clery Act. Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Enforces parking and traffic regulations outlined in the Faculty, Staff and Student Handbooks.
  • Wears approved MC Security Officer uniform and meets uniform standards.
  • Assists campus visitors by providing accurate information about Maryville College such as college hours, office locations, athletic competitions and event information etc.
  • Enforces MC rules and regulations campus wide.
  • Safely operates motorized vehicles (MC Security vehicle, golf carts, utility vehicles) and obeys all traffic laws.
  • Performs periodic fire and safety inspections of all College structures including fire extinguishers and AEDs.
  • Assists responding agencies in emergency and non-emergency calls for service.
  • Performs other duties as assigned. This position is an essential employee for inclement weather events and will be required to report for duty in adverse weather conditions when the College is closed. The position also is required to report on time in situations when the College is on a delayed start and is required to continue working when the College is released early. Supervisory Responsibilities: This job has no supervisory responsibilities. Required Qualifications: Must be at least 18 years of age Valid TN Drivers License Must have high school diploma or general education degree (GED) Able to pass pre-employment drug screen and criminal background check Able to pass pre-employment physical Additional: See TN Code Annotated 62-35-117 Preferred Qualifications: 1 semester credits or more from an accredited college or university Current TN Security License Good customer service skills Demonstrate self-restraint and ability to remain professional in challenging and/or difficult situations Demonstrate problem-solving skills Ability to work in a multi-cultural setting Education and/or Experience: If not currently certified with the State of Tennessee as unarmed security, will need to complete training within 15 days of hire. Language Skills: Ability to read and comprehend instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write detailed incident reports. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization. Mathematical Skills: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs. Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving many variables in nonstandardized situations. Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: A valid Tennessee Drivers license is required. Maintains State of Tennessee Unarmed Security Officer Certification. Maintains annual CPR/AED certification.   • Responds to and investigates a variety of incidents occurring on campus i.e. theft, disorderly conduct, vandalism, alcohol violations, drug violations, motor vehicle accidents, etc.
  • Completes internal reports to document activity, observations, and calls for service.
  • Uses radio or cell phone to call and communicate with local police, fire, EMS and other emergency response personnel as necessary to mitigate campus emergencies.
  • Reports any safety and/or damage concerns to the Director of Safety and Security, and/or Physical Plant Department.
  • Completes Tennessee Incident Based Reporting System (TIBRS) reports and narratives documenting Group A and B crime incidents that occur on MC property.
  • Works closely with Residence Life personnel to maintain a safe and secure residential experience for students.
  • Ability to work well with others.
  • Meets MC Security Department standards.
  • Maintains a professional image and promotes positive public relations.
  • Uses basic computer skills i.e. email, word processing, Security database, IRIS Emergency Notification software, etc.
  • Observes suspicious activities, circumstances, or situations and takes the actions necessary to investigate and resolve.
  • HIPAA designated employee with responsibility to administer and handle the Personal Health Information of College employees and their dependents in a confidential manner.
  • Subject to working overtime, weekends, holidays and nights.
  • Responds to all non-emergency calls to include but not limited to lock/unlock buildings; assist motorists (employees, students, visitors).
  • Provides security for events such as athletic events, concerts, speakers, commencement and numerous other activities where security personnel are required to provide crowd control and maintain order.
  • Patrols all buildings and grounds of the MC campus on foot and by motorized vehicle examining doors, windows, gates and buildings to ensure that they are safe and secure.
  • Regular attendance and shift work is required.
