Security Guard (Fire/Life/Safety Officer) - The Oasis at Death Valley - Xanterra Travel Collection

Job Summary:

We are looking for a Security Guard ( We call them Fire Life Safety Officers) to provide safety and protection for guests and employees of The Oasis at Death Valley properties. This role serves as a first responder in all guest and/or employee incidents and/or property wide emergency situations. Our mission is to provide legendary service to our guests visiting from all over the world, and your work is instrumental to our success!

With over 3.4 million acres to explore, Death Valley is situated in the northern Mojave Desert in California and is the largest National Park outside of Alaska. Incredibly diverse ecosystems, sand dunes, mountains, and touting America's lowest elevations - Death Valley is an incredible place to call home. The Oasis at Death Valley operates two hotels, restaurants, gift shops, and the world's lowest elevation golf course. Our historic AAA Four Diamond Inn and Ranch offer guests a variety of accommodations. Both hotels have swimming pools that are open annually and are fed from naturally warm local springs.

Responsibilities:
  • Be knowledgeable of location fire extinguishing equipment, gas shut off valves, and main electrical disconnects.
  • Exercise sound judgment and the use of available information to resolve issues and in taking appropriate action when dealing with employees and employee housing issues.
  • Observe, report and document any violations of policies, rules, regulations and laws. This applies to both guests and employees.
  • Respond to all intrusion and fire alarms and assist in implementing Emergency Response Team (ERT) procedures.
  • Conduct on-going inspections and walking/driving patrols of all areas during your shift to assess levels of safety on location.
  • Investigate and report incidents of employees engaged in horseplay, loitering, or violations of clearly stated policies.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Patrol buildings and grounds to observe and identify potential safety risks or undesirable conditions, such as fires, theft and vandalism. Inspect doors, windows and locks in designated

  • Investigate and report incidents of unusual circumstances or disturbances reported by staff, off-duty employees, guests or visitors.
  • Provide a safe and secure living, working, and park experience environment for all employees and guests.
  • Perform public safety and protective functions in a courteous and professional manner while coping with emergencies, undesired conduct, disturbances and threats to property and life.
  • Xanterra employees to be additional eyes and ears for the Fire Life Safety department.
  • Assist with and perform post-accident injury illness investigations.
  • Follow up on department required fire extinguisher inspections at end of each month. Inspect and sign off on tag of any extinguisher not inspected.
  • Prepare accurate and detailed written reports documenting investigative steps and their results, as well as other shift activities and employee relation problems.
  • Respond to emergency calls for assistance with controlling disorderly or combative employees or guests, first aid, fire, evacuation, ADA rooms, etc.
  • Project a positive, customer service oriented demeanor when interacting with employees and visitors and develop an atmosphere of cooperation and goodwill, to enlist the assistance of
  • Use positive reinforcement strategies and other appropriate techniques to assist in maintaining proper behavior or conduct within the community living environment.
  • Areas to determine the level of safety; ensure that only authorized personnel are present in back-of-house areas or restricted areas.

Qualifications:
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Must be willing to work any combination of days, evenings, and nights as needed.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • Ability to become proficient in Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Internet, and other computer-based applications.
  • Valid driver’s license.
Physical Demands:
  • Must be able to lift 50 lbs. up to shoulder height.
  • Must be able to walk on varying terrains between 4-6 hours a day.
  • Must be able to talk or hear, close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
  • Physically able to work standing and walking for up to eight hours, and must have the endurance to function in a fast-paced and high-stress environment.
  • Frequently required to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, bend, twist, reach, and grasp.
  • Must be able to withstand working in extreme outdoor summer temperatures.
Minimum Required Training Certifications:
  • Required to complete elements of Incident Action Planning (IAP)
  • Possession of or ability to obtain CPR/First Aid certification.
  • Furnace Creek Fire Brigade training which includes scenarios serving as part of the support staff, helping to secure the area nd direct gues and employee traffic
Driving Company-owned Vehicles:
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license, and no more than three moving violations within the last twelve months on driving record. Employees on temporary permits or probationary licenses will not be allowed to drive Company vehicles.
  • A minimum visual acuity of 20/50 (or corrected to 20/50) is required. The Company reserves the right to periodically check the driving records of all operators of Company-owned, rented or leased vehicles to ensure compliance with all applicable laws.
  • Drivers may need to lift heavy objects and load them into their vehicles, requiring upper body strength and physical stamina.
  • Company vehicles may include golf and utility carts and passenger vehicles.
