MITRE’s AI Security and Perception Department within the Artificial Intelligence and Autonomy Innovation Center consists of a multi-generational, diverse team united by a passion and a sense of urgency to harness Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) to help solve problems in the public interest. The AI Security and Perception Department is looking for qualified applicants for a Group Leader position. This group leader will lead an innovative team of engineers focused on Secured AI, which includes discovering vulnerabilities and securing AI and AI-enabled systems against these vulnerabilities as well as creating and validating defenses against these vulnerabilities. The right candidate will be a technical leader that enjoys mentoring and is conformable in a fast-paced team environment and working with cutting-edge technology. The candidate for this position will work a wide variety of challenging activities in direct support of sponsor programs and MITRE’s AI security and perception efforts.

The Group Leader (GL) is the first line technical leader focused on the rigor and technical quality of products delivered to our customers. The GL is:

  • The lead of their respective group, ensuring high technical quality and timely delivery of products to internal and external customers, building, and shaping the group’s work, being the primary POC for the group’s capabilities, and overseeing the group’s lab resources and needs.
  • The first-line supervisor, advocate on behalf of their staff, and primary point of contact (POC) for advice, growth, and performance discussions with the technical staff in their group.
  • A key contributor to one or more projects.

In performing these roles, the GL works with project leads, task leads, and department management to assign the right staff to tasks and projects based on the skills and capabilities required, considering staff development needs and desired growth areas. GLs provide the critical operational leadership for managing staff to deliver tangible products and achieve project-level objectives and outcomes. They are also a key part of hiring and growing our team.

Job Highlights

  • Collaboration and Communications – Supports regular communication between staff and Project/Task Leaders, serves as a proactive liaison between staff and Department/upper management, seeks collaboration opportunities across portfolios, and facilitates open sharing of program and/or technical area knowledge with other managers and staff. Key qualities of an effective GL are presence, responsiveness, and timeliness.
  • Technical Quality/Execution/Capability Development – Assists department management and leadership team in workforce shaping, work program development, maintaining awareness of emerging technical issues and opportunities.
  • Department and Staff Engagement – Mentors and provides technical support to staff, conducting regular performance and development conversations, staff advocacy and recognition, and communication with Project/Task Leads on performance.
  • Technical Contributor – Actively contributes to a technical work program and develops high quality technical products resulting in successful customer outcomes.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Experience mentoring staff.
  • US citizen, able to obtain and maintain a US government security clearance.
  • Typically requires a minimum of 8 years of related experience with a Bachelor’s degree; or 6 years and a Master’s degree; or a PhD with 3 years’ experience; or equivalent combination of related education and work experience.
  • Demonstrated technical depth in machine learning and AI.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Active US government security clearance.
  • 8+ years’ applicable experience, including 2+ years of leadership experience.
  • Ability to articulate AI/ML specific challenges, discuss critical issues, and identify gaps.
  • Worked on and/or leadership of teams to implement and evaluate ML algorithms.
  • Knowledge of the advances in machine learning capabilities in industry and academia.
  • Experience and success in mentoring staff, leading teams, and handling challenging situations with discretion.
  • Experience developing, proposing, and executing research in the field of machine learning.
  • Understand the breadth of AI/ML uses, and strengths and weaknesses across different domains (DoD, Services, Intelligence Community, DHS, Industry, and Academia).
  • Experience with sensing in non-traditional modalities, to include acoustic and RF data, overhead imagery, and/or synthetic aperture radar.

$158,000 - $197,500 - $237,000 Annual
