The Division of Drug Product Development Materials Science & Engineering Group, at Bristol Myers Squibb is seeking a highly motivated Scientist (EG-100) with experience in small molecule, single-crystal X-ray diffraction, crystal growth, and solid form characterization of pharmaceutically relevant materials.


Responsibilities


  • Work with Discovery chemists elucidating structures of key reaction intermediates and potential lead candidate molecules; use structural knowledge to assist chemists with drug design.
  • Perform solid state characterization of drug substances using various analytical techniques such as PXRD, TGA, DSC, spectroscopy, PLM and DVS.
  • Determine the crystal structures of small molecule drug candidates and key intermediates; provide insights into the relationship between physicochemical properties and molecular packing and intermolecular interactions in the solid-state and how this may impact drug substance and drug product development.
  • Design and execute single crystal growth experiments of drug molecules to grow crystals of suitable quality from poorly crystalline materials and to help identify polymorph, salt & co-crystal form candidates.
  • Use software visualization and analysis tools to assess packing arrangements, intra- and intermolecular interactions, and other structural properties affecting solubility and stability.
  • Serve as Crystallography Representative on Materials Teams reporting on single crystal structure determination results, salt and co-crystal screens, and Crystal Structure Prediction analyses; recommend additional experiments and/or screens as appropriate.
  • Provide polymorph risk assessments leveraging experimental and predicted crystal structure data.


Requirements


  • Hands-on experience in single crystal X-ray diffraction, structure solution & refinement, crystallization, form selection and solid-state characterization
  • Excellent interpersonal, collaboration and communications skills with a high level of technical independence and creativity
  • Ph.D. in Chemistry, Materials Science, Pharmaceutical Science, or a related field with 0-3 years of relevant work experience or M.Sc. in Chemistry, Materials Science, Pharmaceutical Science, or a related field with 5-7 years of relevant work experience
  • Experience using structure database tools and analytical software such as the Cambridge Structural Database and related software


Desirable Skills


  • Knowledge of physical and solid-state chemistry of organic molecules
  • Experience with python scripting or other coding skills a plus.
  • Hands on experience in crystallization/recrystallization
  • Familiarity with other solid form characterization techniques such as PXRD, TGA, DSC, and vibrational spectroscopy
