Department Summary

The UO Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry offers undergraduate major and minor degrees in chemistry and biochemistry, and graduate degrees at the masters and Ph.D. levels. Our program's unique strength is its interdisciplinary research and teaching approach. Chemical scientists may be interested in the Institute of Molecular Biology, the Institute of Fundamental Science, the Materials Science Institute, the Oregon Center for Optical, Molecular, and Quantum Science, and the programs in cell biology and in molecular synthesis, structure, and dynamics, as well as the Knight Campus for Accelerating Scientific Impact.

Position Summary

The purpose of this position is to support the research mission of science departments and institutes at the university and in the community by managing the on-site Science Stores operation. The position will manage a variety of functions to support day-to-day operations of the Science Stores, including monitoring inventory and provision of supplies and resources, interpretation and explanation of policy and procedure pertaining to supply operations, training and educating "customers" on safety of chemicals and other supplies, and management of student staffing including hiring, scheduling, and supervision of student employees. The position will determine appropriate levels of shelf inventory, order and oversee the receiving, storage, and check-out of lab materials in accordance with appropriate guidelines for handling, safety, and storage, and support the accounting and inventory reporting activities of the unit.
This position interacts daily with graduate researchers, undergraduate researchers, postdocs, research associates and assistants, professors, teaching lab instructors and staff, and researchers from local scientific companies. They will work with laboratory supplies and resources such as chemicals, solvents, enzymes, compressed gases, liquid nitrogen, laboratory consumables, dry ice, apparatus, and other supplies, and will maintain MSDS records.

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in chemistry or related field.
  • Two years of experience with high-level research in a university setting.
  • One year of experience supervising students or employees.
  • Two years of experience handling a wide variety and types of chemicals and gases.

Professional Competencies

  • Experience serving a diverse client/customer base.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with university procurement methods.
  • Work experience in a customer-facing environment.
  • Experience managing inventory.
  • Experience using BANNER or similar systems.
