DESCRIPTION

Starting salary for this position is: $18.93 (Hourly)

Employees starting at the entry step of this range receive salary step advancement after six months and every 12 months thereafter. If an employee starting at anything higher than the entry step of the range, will have salary step advancement after 12 months and salary step advancement every 12 months thereafter until they reach the top of the salary range. Each salary step advancement will be approximately a 5% increase in salary.

The Community Colleges of Spokane is seeking a highly motivated and qualified individual for the position of Science Lab Technician in the SCC Rural Education Department.

GENERAL DEFINITION

Positions work under general supervision assists by performing routine instructional support services for the Newport Center.

Duties include activities such as assisting in preparing materials and equipment for use in a shop, classroom or laboratory; setting up, maintaining, and operating equipment in accordance with standardized procedures or instructions received from the Dean; assisting students in course work assignments, individualized, and group instruction for development of learning skills such as reading, study skills, or other instructional areas; assisting instructors in presenting course material; and administering and scoring tests.

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES


  • Administers standardized tests to students, scores tests and records results for analysis. *
  • Prepares materials for use in classrooms, laboratories or instructional shops; sets up assignments, equipment or demonstration apparatus for classes; confers with instructor in establishing and developing assignments. *
  • Assists supervisor/instructor in classroom work, field trips, and lecture periods; assists in the classroom with self-help needs. *
  • Receives materials and supplies used in classes; assists instructors in demonstration of tools, equipment, machinery, apparatus and materials. *
  • Support and advance the CCS strategic plan, and perform other duties as assigned. *
  • Follow schedules; communicate with instructors; set up solutions, chemicals, and other supplies for the week’s labs; safely designate, treat, and/or dispose of waste; maintain lab equipment; and maintain/order supplies for instructional biology labs. *
  • Catalogues equipment and supplies for easy acquisitions and orders supplies. *
  • Model professional decorum and mutual respect in all personal interactions. *
  • Instructs student assistants in the operation and maintenance of study skills equipment; operates equipment such as controlled readers, shadow scopes, language master, typewriter, and other office and business machines. *
  • Modifies equipment, materials and programs as required for individual instructors; assists students and instructors in selecting correct tools and materials. *
  • Monitors laboratories to ensure compliance with safety policy. *
  • Comply with district policies, procedures and directives, state and federal regulations, orders and statutes and collective bargaining agreements. *

  • Indicates this is an essential duty.
This position is eligible for bargaining unit representation.

COMPETENCIES & OTHER REQUIREMENTS

REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS)


  • Good communication skills with student, faculty, staff, and community.
  • Demonstrated commitment to fostering and supporting a teaching, learning and working environment that honors diversity, equity and inclusion.
  • The ability to perform assigned duties in a manner consistent with applicable laws, regulations and goals of the institution, and community and technical college system.
  • Acceptance of the responsibility to promote the welfare and best interests of students at all times.
  • A demonstrable understanding and acceptance of the vision, mission, values, goals, objectives and strategic plan of CCS.

PREFERRED COMPETENCIES (DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS)
  • Six months to two years of full-time experience/training in the appropriate discipline.
  • Or an equivalent mix of education and experience that demonstrates the candidate meets all competency requirements for this position.

CONDITIONS/TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

Person hired must be able to provide acceptable documentation of U.S. Citizenship or lawful authorization to work in the United States. This is an absolute condition of employment. An offer of employment will not carry with it any responsibility or obligation on the part of the district to sponsor an H1-B visa. Must be able to successfully work in and promote a multicultural work and education environment.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
  • Work schedule will be determined by the supervisor.
  • Criminal background check is required.
  • This position is overtime eligible.
  • Non-permanent, hourly position.
