Job Description
A Bit About Us:
We are Arcadia Science. Arcadia is a science company founded and led by scientists. Our mission is to transform evolutionary innovations into real-world solutions by openly developing more efficient, replicable, and sustainable ways to leverage the biology of diverse organisms.

Publishing at Arcadia:
We’re experimenting with new ways of sharing science, hoping to maximize speed, utility, and rigor in publishing. We share research in the form of modular “pubs” on our own platform (powered by PubPub), without journals. The Publishing Team supports our scientists in adopting and pushing the boundaries of this new approach. Now that we’ve established a robust internal process for this, we’ve identified key ways to improve and we’re expanding the team.

The Opportunity:
We’re seeking a creative scientific illustrator or designer who will make the figures we publish shine. Our scientists are responsible for generating data and thinking through how to communicate it, and they’ll usually make their own first-draft figures. The Science Illustrator will keep the style consistent, give each draft a glow-up, and create original illustrations and big-picture figures from scratch.

We want someone with a clean, elegant style who can communicate concepts clearly. The Science Illustrator should maintain our brand identity but shouldn’t be afraid to make improvements to it and keep evolving as design trends shift. While clarity and usefulness are always our guiding lights, our figures don’t need to be basic! The ideal candidate will make appealing graphics with a unique “Arcadia look.”

The Science Illustrator should be an expert-level user of various digital design platforms, used to working directly with scientists, and able to juggle multiple projects simultaneously. While not essential, we’d also value skills in layout, animation, motion graphics, and video editing.

Responsibilities:

  • Developing graphics for Arcadia scientists’ presentations, posters, social media, or other contexts.
  • Adding figures to draft pub layouts on our publishing platform and updating them as we iterate.
  • Building figures from scratch based on conversations with scientists and the Publishing Team.
  • Applying Arcadia’s house style to draft figures that scientists provide.
  • Improving our house style as needed and developing additional brand resources (e.g. extended color palettes, style guides).
  • Adjusting figures to better convey information and make them easier to understand.
  • Creating more naturalistic illustrations for narrative pages (see example) and/or Arcadia website.

Education/Experience:

  • Experience working directly with scientists is preferred. Experience working with people who have a wide range of expertise.
  • 5+ years of experience making scientific visuals across styles, contexts, and subject matter.
Interested applicants should submit a cover letter, resume, personal website link and/or design portfolio, and three samples of relevant work samples (scientific/data-centric). Note that we’ve also posted a listing for a Data Visualization Designer. Please read that posting carefully to make sure you find the right fit. If you feel that you really have the skill set for both positions, please apply to one but make a note in your cover letter that you’d like to be considered for either.

This role could be part- or full-time at an annualized salary rate of $90,000–$125,000 per year with generous equity and benefits, depending on experience level. The Science Illustrator is part of the Publishing team and reports to the Director of Publishing. We are open to the role being performed remotely or on-site at our Berkeley, California headquarters.

Arcadia Science is an equal opportunity workplace; we welcome people from all backgrounds and communities. We provide competitive compensation and practical benefits to keep you happy and healthy so that you can do your best work. Please note that an offer of employment from Arcadia is contingent upon the successful clearance of a reference and background check.
