Position Title: Department Chairperson – Nursing Program

Position Number: 335

Position Reports to: Associate Dean of Pre-Licensure Programs / Associate Dean of Post-Licensure Programs, School of Nursing

Position Summary:

The Chairperson for the Nursing Program is responsible for the daily operations of the assigned Nursing Program (ASN, BSN, RN-BSN, MSN DE or MSN-FNP) and reports directly to the School of Nursing Associate Deans for either Pre-Licensure (for ASN, BSN or DE) or Post Licensure Programs (for FNP). The Chair is accountable for coverage and seamless operations of the School of Nursing Programs. The Chair is responsible to assure all published policies and procedures are met. The Chair will engage and interact with students, faculty, staff, and other departments on a daily basis assuring the highest level of satisfaction and efficiency while meeting outcomes and goals.

Administrative Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assists in the implementation of the Systematic Evaluation Plan in accordance with their provisions.
  • Assist the respective Associate Dean in reviewing and recommending program textbook, software, and curriculum changes.
  • Evaluates and supervises full time and part time staff and faculty within the assigned nursing program.
  • Maintains accountability and operational oversight of the assigned nursing program (ASN, BSN, RN-BSN, MSN DE or MSN-FNP).
  • Assures compliance with the accrediting and regulatory agencies MRU is licensed with.
  • Organizes, plans, and implements nursing pinning ceremonies in cooperation with the Dean of Nursing.
  • Assure adequate staffing of all courses and a plan for substitution in the event a faculty member is unable to attend to a session
  • Facilitates development and implementation of curricula.
  • Assure all students falling below minimum passing standards for the nursing program are set by the faculty meet with appropriate faculty and receive advising, tutoring and additional support services to achieve success. Assure documentation of all advising and students below minimum standards are accurate, uploaded to CampusVue and filed in the student file.
  • Assure all university and school forms are completed accurately and with required detail, uploaded to CampusVue and filed in the student file
  • Assures faculty meet practice standards, University appointment and promotion requirements by monitoring adherence and supporting faculty in facilitating compliance
  • Reviews and makes recommendations for all student ADD/DROP requests advising the Associate Dean / Dean of Nursing and as appropriate, the Provost
  • Teaches at least one course within the discipline per academic year.
  • Collaborates with the academic advising for the nursing students
  • Maintains data to support systematic program evaluation.
  • Completes other duties as assigned.
  • Assures faculty and students adhere to all policies and procedures outline within the University Catalog, Student and Faculty Handbook
  • Serves on program Committees and maintains Campus and University policies, procedures and guidelines.
  • Participates in the hiring of full time and part time faculty
  • Effectively represents the Division of Nursing when serving on assigned University committees and attending community functions.
  • Maintains knowledge of the University Catalog, Student and Faculty handbook relating to all School of Nursing policies, procedures, curriculum and regulating agencies standards, statutes, rules and policies
  • Responsible for licensure or certification rates, depending on assigned nursing program: NCLEX Licensure Rates: ASN, Pure BSN and MSN-DE programs
  • Maintains accurate records and supporting data related to student performance, enrollment and success of meeting publishes outcomes and goals for the nursing program.
  • Manages program resources.
  • Assures faculty are competent in the use of all technology and learning resources utilized by the School and University
  • Supports the Director of the Center for Students Achievement in meeting nursing program’s standards.
  • Understands the position of Department Chair is an exempt position requiring long hours to include early morning, late evening, weekends, and holidays.
  • Communicates with full-time and part-time faculty on curriculum and instruction matters and ensures ongoing development of staff.
  • Participates in meetings of the Nursing Programs Advisory Committee
  • Assures compliance with ACEN, the nursing programmatic accrediting agencies standards, policies and procedures
  • Works closely with the respective Associate Dean and the Dean of the School of Nursing.
  • Certification Rates: MSN-FNP program
  • Ensures that School of Nursing programs are compliant with Florida Board of Nursing and Programmatic Accreditation.
  • Reviews and assures the accuracy of requested transfer credits for incoming nursing students. Requests to be signed within 24 hours from request.
  • Completes all assignments and responsibilities within the expected timeframe in an accurate and quality fashion
  • Supports the Dean of Nursing in annual reports submissions to the Board of Nursing.
  • Assures compliance with Florida Board of Nursing statutes, policies and procedures.
  • Follows the MRU established complaint process.
  • Assures all ASN program examinations are administered with the strictest of security and proctoring meets standards
  • Assists in the recruitment and student retention efforts.
  • Supports the Dean of Nursing in the development of programmatic and institutional accreditation reports and visit.
  • Monitors nursing graduate and employer surveys and provides recommendations to the respective Associate Dean and the Dean of Nursing for program improvement, as needed.
  • Assures class scheduling (class count ratio) and faculty workload are balanced, effective, cost efficient and appropriate to achieve Student Learning Outcomes.
  • Meets or exceeds program outcomes as outlined in the Nursing Program’s IAIP

Minimum Qualifications

  • Eligibility to be appointed as a clinical faculty under Florida State Board of Nursing Statute, CIE, ACCSC, ACEN and SACSCOC accrediting agencies.
  • A terminal Degree in Nursing from an accredited college/university for the graduate program. Master’s degree in nursing for undergraduate programs – doctoral degree preferred
  • Must have excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong understanding of nursing and clinical education
  • Satisfactory criminal background check.
  • Flexible work hours, must complete assignments and meet outcomes and goals
  • Meet short deadlines with accuracy and compliance
  • Work professionally with other departments and disciplines
  • At least three years experience in nursing and nursing operations within an academic setting. Hospital based education experience may be used to a maximum of one year in meeting this requirement
  • A current, unencumbered, Florida Board of Nursing license to practice as a Registered Nurse or an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse, depending on the program

  • Meets the nursing program established goals relating to clinical partnerships
  • Meets the goals established for nursing programs relating to graduation rates
  • Meets the strategic goals established for nursing programs
  • Ensures program outcomes meet the required pass rates per program as published by the Florida Board of Nursing
  • Meets the goals established for nursing programs relating to student retention rates

POSITION SCHEDULE:

Forty hours per week but may vary daily and weekend hours may be required based on the needs of the university
